Thanks for the tip. I was using a variation of the overview_fmt,
xover, and a hash that, well, got very messy.

Thanks.

Hey, all, thanks for the help. I really do appreciate it!

I had originally started my own program that was quite similar to
this, but the only information I was getting was the newsgroup name,
first, last, and number of articles. I couldn't get it to pull up the
article itself, which is why I thought I was doing something wrong.

But when I used your program above, Jim, I get the same thing. It's
like "$nntp->last" isn't returning anything. I tried setting a
variable to it, like "$lastmessage = $nntp->last" and according to
CPAN that's supposed to return the message ID, but it didn't return
anything at all.

Is there a syntax error here that I'm overlooking? Following this
program verbatim, the only results I got were:

comp.lang.perl.misc: 29851 articles (448306 to 478156)
num: 1

Nothing in the "while" statement at all. Thanks again, all,

Mike

I'm at a loss. I tested against leafnode as the NNTP server and it
worked. According to the documentation, using the 'last' method sets
the marker to the last message.

In theory, if you were to uncomment that line, you may have better
results - depending upon what NNTP server you use it against. Or,
you could get the first message ID, use the 'nntpstat' method to set
the message marker for that message, then use next to iterate through
all the messages. It's just a guess.

 I don't want to test against a "live" NNTP server until I feel
comfortable using Net::NNTP yet. I use a dialup connection and don't
wish to be on all night if something goes south. Sorry I don't have
a
better answer for you at this moment. If I come up with anything,
I'll post it -or- if someone else has run into this situation, maybe
they'll post a solution.

You should check out Randal's solution (posted in another post). That
may give you some more ideas. I haven't had a chance to read it fully
yet..

Oh for the love of Larry Wall, I believe this is the second time you've
tried to put my name among others it has nothing to do with. Get a life and
stop trying to cast miss-leading notions.

Translation: I have nothing to do with those other names on that set of
names you concocted.

I don't ever recall ever have any confrontation with any of you, so I don't
know why you continue to pursue anyone who makes a god forsaken typo. I
didn't think it would be such a chastise-worthy crime, sorry. I do hate
getting defense, but it seems you've left me little choice.

Yes I am, but it was only a tertiary indication.

I was reasonably sure it was you before I inserted the typo in my post.

   From what I heard a while back, comp.lang.perl simply changed
   it's name to comp.lang.perl.misc.

   What was the reason for this? Does anyone know?

echoing this one:

   As long as I've been around, I do find it courious as to why exactly
   this groups name went from comp.lang.perl to comp.lang.perl.misc. I've
   sarch the control-message archives and they basically say it was simply
   moving.

The secondary indication was your proclivity for transposing
letters and other signs of carelessness in composition.

Those 2 heuristics where enough for me, even without the jsut.

You are looking at the wrong person's headers. I never had prodigy, nor have
I ever had or used suc han email. I really don'y see what you are trying to
accomplish here.

wtf? Do you even know what you are talking about? Those are two completely
different headers you posted.
The "From what I heard a while back", maybe that was one of the past threads
about it, who knows. The seconds header is dated almost a year ago, so it is
possible, though there have been other queries about that.

None of what you have presented supports your claim that I am someone who
you tried to (miss) label me as.

I honestly do not know what your problem is, but I am not your whale, Ahab.
It probably swam off long ago. I don't really care. I just don't find it
fair that, a known regular for that matter, would try to do this to someone
who was just trying to participate in a conversation.

Rubbish. Complete rubbish. You are try again to miss label me with non
facts. You have thus far present no real proof of anything. This seems like
some kind of strange obsession of yours, and I want no part of it.

Please find someone else to screw with.

This is a bad example. These lines are only RUN once.

Compare:

  sub make_qr {
    my $pat = shift;
    return qr/$pat/o;
  }

  print make_qr('foo'), "\n";
  print make_qr('bar'), "\n";

It prints the foo regex both times.
