Evening all =)
Working on a "simple" hack but some regex isn't playing ball (my fault
somewhere).. the code I'm currently using looks like (note: there's many
more elegant ways I'm sure, but this is a "quick hack" at present):
#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;
my $scan_path = '/home/tk/tmp/mails/';
my $scan_command = 'f-prot -archive -packed -collect -dumb';
my $scan_results = `$scan_command $scan_path`;
my ($user, $attachment, $infection);
$scan_results =~ s#.*Switches: -ARCHIVE -PACKED
-COLLECT\n\n(.*)\n\nResults of virus scanning:.*#$1#s;
if (m#^$scan_path(.*?)->(.*)\s+Infection:\s+(.*)$#) {
($user,$attachment, $infection) = ($1, $2, $3);
}
print "$scan_results\n\n";
print <<EOS;
Username : $user
Attachment : $attachment
Infection : $infection
EOS
The output looks like:
/usr/home/tk/tmp/mails/mailbox->screen_doc.pif Infection:
W32/Sobig.B@mm
/usr/home/tk/tmp/mails/tk_mbox->screen_doc.pif Infection:
W32/Sobig.B@mm
(note: this is on 2 lines only in a shell.. wrapped by news client)
When running the script, I get the following output:
[tk@hybris:~/dev/perl]$ ./mail_scan.pl
Use of uninitialized value in pattern match (m//) at ./mail_scan.pl line
13./usr/home/tk/tmp/mails/mailbox->screen_doc.pif Infection:
W32/Sobig.B@mm/usr/home/tk/tmp/mails/tk_mbox->screen_doc.pif Infection:
W32/Sobig.B@mm

./mail_scan.pl line 18. Use of uninitialized value in concatenation (.)
or string at ./mail_scan.pl line 18. Use of uninitialized value in
concatenation (.) or string at ./mail_scan.pl line 18. Username :
Attachment :
Infection :
I suspect (although I may well be wrong) that the / in the path is
causing a possibly issue, but I'm stumped.
If anyone has any help or advice.. it'd be greatly appreciated =)
TIA.
Regards,
Ian

Due to the propagation delays of Usenet, the timezone differences in
an international forum and the fact that most people only read

Well, you've done nothing to set $_ (so it'll be undef) then you do a
m// with no =~ (so it'll act on $_, which, as I said, is undef).

The DBI module provides a method for capturing the 'conversation'
between the script and the database in question. Have you tried
something like ...
DBI->trace(4,'tracefile');
The tracefile may hold some useful information about what happened.
For more information about the 'trace' method, consult the DBI
documentation.
You may also want to check with the DBD::Oracle documentation as well.
I am not certain, but some methods are available with some drivers
(DBD modules) and others are not. Again, I'm not sure about this, so
you may want to double check me.

You seem to be missing my point. Just because something is "the party
line" doesn't make it wrong. It doesn't make it right either, but just
because a majority believes something doesn't make them automatically
wrong.
For example, the idea that murder is a Bad Thing (tm) is pretty
generally accepted. Does that mean it's a good thing? No. Granted,
it's an extreme example, but it's still the same idea.

There is a small clique of comp.lang.perl.misc "clerics" that
like to beat up on nubies and other infidels that don't bow
before them. When they resort to personal attacks, you know
you've got them out of their safe little caves and have them on
the run. Sooner or later they will give you their big "PLONK!",
which is the equivalent of them rolling over like a dog,
urinating on themselves, and then hiding under mommies skirt.

In a nutshell, if you can access the Internet (ie your network allows
outbound traffic to the Internet via port 80), then you can use CPAN -
you just have to configure it to do so.
Don't be offended, but can you use a browser to access the Internet
from your network? If so, how is the browser set up to do this?
I'm thinking the answer may present itself after you answer these two
questions.

I guess that what this is about is that you need to acquaint yourself

a good starting-point: http://asg.web.cmu.edu/rfc/rfc1855.html

So why these results (all are primes -- the first two are 2**17-1 and
2**13-1, well known Mersenne primes, 32003 is stated as prime in the
reference article)?
I wouldn't have thought that 262143 "ones" would have exhausted
memory. So is the regex crashing?
$ perl -wle 'print "Prime" if (1 x shift) !~ /^1?$|^(11+?)\1+$/'
262143
$ perl -wle 'print "Prime" if (1 x shift) !~ /^1?$|^(11+?)\1+$/' 8191
$ perl -wle 'print "Prime" if (1 x shift) !~ /^1?$|^(11+?)\1+$/' 32003
$ perl -wle 'print "Prime" if (1 x shift) !~ /^1?$|^(11+?)\1+$/' 967
Prime

I will no longer co-operate with these because too often I get no
response. I don't know whether it' because the mail never reached
the Webmaster, or the Webmaster is simply not polite enough to
respond.

I think that's more a reflection of the professionalism of the site owners.
Shame on them if they can't write and debug a mail script before using it on
their site, and double shame if they put the work in and then don't bother
to respond to their visitors/customers.

I offer users both the above and an email address - to give them the
choice of whatever they're happier with. Both get used - so I infer
different people have different preferences.
At the moment with all the latest Microsoft worm hitting the server,
it's even more than usually filtered. Talking of which, all the crap
has a header "X-MailScanner: Found to be clean". Am I in danger of
losing legit. email by filtering on that?

attracting Worms? Viruses, perhaps, but not worms. The emails
produced by worms to self-propagate are just an added 'feature' of
worms, not how they infect systems directly. However, this is not a
Perl issue. Did you want to do this using Perl -or- was this just a
generic "I don't know where else to post this" type question?

Redefine your search. Using the keywords:
tips prevent spam web posting
on Google yeilded this interesting article:
http://news.com.com/2100-1024-993333.html
Total time: about 20 seconds.
In your post, you just stated email to websites, did you mean just
newsgroups? Are you going to send email to the newsgroup using a Perl
script to do so? You could look over the Net::NNTP module to
acomplish this.

Administrivia:
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
