I'm on a Win2000 box. I got these files mailed to me on a
bunch of CD-ROMS. I store them in my computer. My
WinZip program automatically, or possibly with the help
of an add-on, "unzips" these files. I right click on the file,
drag to my desktop, and select unzip. The file that is
shown inside the gz file (when I double click on the gz
file and WinZip opens it, but does not extract it), goes to
my desktop and the original gz file stays intact where it is.

I suspect my problem here is that I am on a Windows box.
I also suspect, but hope I am wrong, that this is causing
some people to give up on my posts to this newsgroup.

Someday I hope to get a Linux box going, like I did
about 4 years ago. I got it going OK, but gave up on
it after about 3 weeks for various reasons.

This is untrue. The GZIP format also allows for the file name to be
stored _in_ the file. This was used on old DOS systems so that
WHATEVER.TIF could be compressed to WHATEVER.TIZ and then restored to
WHATEVER.TIF. I can see no reason why anything but a DOS version of
gunzip would care about the filename stored inside the GZIP file.

This, of course, has nothing to do with Perl.

Are you sure they are actually a gzip files, as opposed to WinZip files
that someone named with a .gz at the end?

Anyway, I'd just loop on something like this:

system "zcat $oldfilename.tif.gz | gzip > $newfilename.tif.gz"

(I don't know if zcat actually exists under windows.)

Incidentally, one can figure out the answer to this question by starting
up Excel, and selecting a discontinuous range for a formula, and looking
at what is displayed in the formula bar. Considerably faster than waiting
for someone else to do it and post the solution on the UseNet.

Subject: weird perl cgi problem
Message-Id: <1c036f7.0308060738.28a5cdd5@posting.google.com>

Hi,
Got this really weird CGI problem. I use CGI module to output feedback
to the user after the user submits the form. This cgi script runs an
executable on the server side and will output the result after running
the executable. It actually outputs some message saying "please wait a
moment..." and then invokes the executable (it takes some time for the
exe to finish. normally 2-3 minutes) So during the period of time
user's browser is still waiting for the result. The problem I got is
5% of the time user browser does not get the result output and just
keeps waiting (connecting logo is active on IE6.0)although I am pretty
sure the output has been sent back (I know this because after the
output is printed out the final thing the CGI script does is cleaning
up temp files it creates. In the case when user does not get the
result output on server side those temp files have all been cleaned up
which means the "print ..." above cleaning up code should have been
executed.)
This is driving me nuts coz it does not happen all the time. Just 5%
of the time and I have no idea what's wrong. I wonder if somebody can
give me some help here.

Thanks.

Is it possible with Win32::ODBC to create fields?

If not, what application can I use to do this, except Access?

Well, that would rather depend on what you mean by the phrase "create
fields".

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
