Notes
=====

    - A line in the body of a post is considered to be original if it
      does *not* match the regular expression /^\s{0,3}(?:>|:|\S+>|\+\+)/.
    - All text after the last cut line (/^-- $/) in the body is
      considered to be the author's signature.
    - The scanner prefers the Reply-To: header over the From: header
      in determining the "real" email address and name.
    - Original Content Rating (OCR) is the ratio of the original content
      volume to the total body volume.
    - Find the News-Scan distribution on the CPAN!

Subject: stripping characters from xml files
Message-Id: <bfgk35$3h2$1@beta.qmul.ac.uk>

Hi,

I need a perl script to strip some characters from an xml file, for example;

XML snippet
<LOG>
<DIRECT>
       <COMMUNICATION_TYPE> PAGETELL </COMMUNICATION_TYPE>
       <Invoc_serial> 27 </Invoc_serial>
       <Serial> 3088791 </Serial>
       <USAGE> TELL </USAGE>
       <MESSAGE_TYPE> EMOTE </MESSAGE_TYPE>
       <CHARACTER_ID> 28349 </CHARACTER_ID>
       <CHARACTER_STATUS> 6 </CHARACTER_STATUS>
       <LOCATION_ID> 5720 </LOCATION_ID>
       <TARGET_CHARACTER_ID> 44639 </TARGET_CHARACTER_ID>
       <TARGET_CHARACTER_STATUS> 3 </TARGET_CHARACTER_STATUS>
       <TARGET_CHARACTER_LOCATION_ID> 45040 </TARGET_CHARACTER_LOCATION_ID>
       <MESSAGE> %M%lsays%m%l "%y%LAnyone know of any tri-band
phones.%m%l"  </MESSAGE>
       <TIME> 'Mon, 26 Nov 2001 15:42:45 +0000' </TIME>
    </DIRECT>
etc etc
</LOG>

I would need to strip the %M%, %m%l and %y% and various others from just
message tag, to give me:-

<MESSAGE> says "Anyone know of any tri-band phones." </MESSAGE>

Do I have to do it one by one or can I put in a list of all of them and
do it in one go? Each XML file is 20 Mb.

Thanks

Ahmad

||| my($cgiquery) = new CGI;
||| my($blog_id) = $cgiquery->param('blog_id');
|||
||| 'blog_id' is an eighteen digit number, and for some reason I'm

|| The chances are pretty good that somewhere along the way, you did

|| Something like incrementing it, adding a constant to it, or applying
|| any other operator that forces a numeric context. If you don't do
|| any of that, it will stay a string, and the last digit would not
|| change. This scenario is likely because many platforms Perl runs on

Actually, my question was answered in the other thread, in
comp.lang.javascript. I should have come back here sooner. The solution was
to ensure that blog_id was treated as a string from the start, so:
<a href="javascript:cgicomments(<$BlogItemNumber$>)">
becomes
<a href="javascript:cgicomments('<$BlogItemNumber$>')">

And that has solved the problem.

Thanks very much for replying,
Anthony.

where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
