(the following message I originally sent to
comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi but that newsgroup
doesn't show ANY messages beyond last Thurs.
Any of you know what gives ???)

Hi.

For quite awhile I've run the "tiny firewall" software.

Recently, I installed "indigoperl" indluding apache
web server (I'm on windows 98 ) .

My purpose of installing indigoperl is for testing
CGI scripts at home before exporting them to a
commercial web server.

What's interesting is that several times a day
my tiny firewall reports that such-and-such an
ip address is trying to open port 80 on my
web server .

I deny all these attempts and then I use

        ping -a n.n.n.n

to try to figure out WHO is calling.

Are there other useful commands I can use to get
more info ?

I find it curious that ANYONE is calling.

What are the most likely reasons ?

Security breach attempt ?

Some sort of web crawling ?

As far as I know, there are NO web pages out there
pointing at my test server, so this crawling idea
would surprise me.

Any of you have some insight on this sort of thing ?

Thanks.  /Eric

That's it. Script kiddiots. I get lots of those "attacks" in my logs,
even though I have only a dialup line and am online for maybe 30
minutes per day.

there are a *ton* of script kiddies out there trying to hack int IIS,
Microsoft Internet Information Server, and I think you mostly see
those. attempts on YOUR server are rare, but they do happen

congratulations on being intelligent enough to have a firewall...

This really has nothing to do with Perl in any way whatsoever.

Why are you so shocked to find that somoene's attempted to access your
server on your local box?

Anyway.. wrong group for this discussion.

Hi there,

This should do what you want :

  use Win32::Console;
  my $BUFFER = new Win32::Console(STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE);
  $BUFFER->Size(80,100);

Hope that helps.

While it continues to fascinate me that the conventional liter-
ature on Perl so neglects this, in fact interactive access to
the Perl interpreter is readily available <URL: http://

Message-Id: <3dfde2fc$0$149$1b62eedf@news.euronet.nl>

Hi all,

I upgraded to perl v5.8.0. I now get the message:
            "Using a hash as a reference is deprecated" when running a script that"s not mine.

All I found was that this syntax was "allowed by versions of perl <= 5.6 but shouldn't".

The message occurs at lines like:
            %msg->{"refresh"}->{"nl"}= [ "Some text ...." ];

I am ashamed to admit I see no apparent cure for this. Anyone that could help me with an acceptable equivalent syntax?

Thanks in advance,
Jan.

    %msg->{...}

should be

    $msg->{...}

You can only dereference a thingy if that thingy is a reference. Makes
sense, doesn't it :-) Compare

    %msg = (key => "value");   # %msg is a hash

vs

    $msg->{key} = "value";    # $msg is a hash reference

Read 'perldoc perlref' for details.

Thanks Koos, that makes a lot of sense. I changed all the %'s into $'s. However, I now get other messages.

This code snippet:
            #!/usr/bin/perl -w
            use strict;
            my %h;
            $h->{"I"}= [ "hash I" ];
            print $h->{"I"}[0];

yields
            Global symbol "$h" requires explicit package name ...

I now the message occurs when not declaring your stuff, but I assume I did. When I remove the use strict; it works. However, I do
not want to do this as I regard using strict as good practice.

My actual script (almost 1000 lines squidguard.cgi) yields yet another warning:
            Variable "$msg" is not imported

Cheers en groeten
Jan

If only you were correct. The correct equivalent syntax is

	$msg{...}

as it's the hash %msg, not the scalar $msg that is being used. "%msg->"
is quite equivalent to "(\%msg)->", which even works.

The code you HAD:

  %hash->{key} = ...

should be

  $hash{key} = ...

The -> in the code snippet you just tried is erroneous.

I took your advice and changed

%hash->...

into
$has{...

That took vare of things,
Thanks a lot all,
Jan.
