How do you manage to find the time to write all this stuff?

Hmm...perhaps now is a good time for a re-post

A new version of the (in)famous Blue Oyster Cult song:

"With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound
she drags fragile coder egos down

Helpless newbies on the gravy-train
Scream bug-eyed as she looks in on them

Takes their code and tears it to shreds
As she wades through lines and lines of pitiful dretch

* chorus *
Oh, no, they say she's got to go, Go! Go! Godzilla!
Oh, no, there goes another ego! Go! Go! Godzilla!

Larry shows again and again
How Perl points out the folly of men..."

Those who don't know the song can get an idea of the sound here:

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/1718/blueoyst.html

Now be quiet as I turn "The Humpty Dance" into a song about Ruby.

Regards,

Mr. Sunblade

Sure. Some are builtins (including sin, cos, and sqrt). See the perlfunc
manpage for a full list. Look for the "Numeric functions" section.

Statistical functions are not part of Perl itself, but are available via
modules. Statistics::Descriptive provides the basics.

I think this used to read in whole numbers, now it needs to read in
decimals to
two places.

[ ~ ] perl -e 'for (x$=0;$x < 24; $x++) { }'
Number found where operator expected at -e line 1, near "$=0"
(Missing operator before 0?)
Can't call method "x" without a package or object reference at -e line 1.

I have a framed web page. In one frame I want a button that will activate a CGI
script that saves a filled out form in the other frame as a text file on the web
server which can be emailed to any email address.

Possible to do this? Hope so...

Thanks in advance.

I have since solved this problem(it was posted before but was not
listed under the subject I thought it would be) so here is the
solution for others edification:

To get around this (sometimes fatal) error, simply include
the 'Hello' argument in the call to send_by_smtp() (see the MIME::Lite
docs for the proper syntax). Note: the hostname that the 'Hello' field
refers to can be found using the Sys::Hostname package to avoid having
to supply (a generic/dummy) one yourself.

JAPHs properly end with a comma. the "hacker," form is correct.

Nope, it's with the script.

You're telling the server to set binary mode before you log-in.

Log-in is step one for any connected server, and WS-FTP complies.

But the OP isn't saying there are rows he doesn't want.

The solution is surprisingly easy. Rows are fetched from a database
one by one. Use a counter. Fetch rows, one by one. Store them in a
buffer. For each row, add one to the counter. If the counter hits 50,
or if there are no more rows, process the rows. Clear the buffer.
Reset the counter. Repeat as long as there are rows to fetch.

I have an application where I need to pass arbitray data (happens to be
rows retrieved from a db table) between two co-operating perl scripts via a
pipe. The data will be retrived as collumns and rows using DBI, and I want
to put it back together as collumn/row data sets on the recieving end. Data
may be arbitray text strings, mixed with numbers, and dates.

Is there a standard way of doing this inperl?

If you have seen any relational database theory or if you have studied
combinatorics you would realize that the set of all strings that match an
arbitrary regular expression is not small.

Consider a simple RE, all strings of any length that start with 'a' ('a.*')
Without external constraints this RE will generate an infinite set.
Now consider another RE, all strings that end in 'b' ('.*b'). This is
another infinite set. Next consider the alternation of these two RE.

	(a.*)|(.*b)

It's easy to check if a given string is a member of the set, but it
quite impossible to generate all the members of the set on a finite
computer.

I am totally guessing, but perhaps they are compiled the first time into
"temporary" files.

You may need to find those files and delete them by hand every time you
edit the template.

how could we know, without some specifics.

maybe you have to do a make install or something after changing

Your description of the problem is not at all clear to me. Maybe you can
post a small sample of the data you want to manipulate and perhaps some
things that you've tried and maybe describe how they went wrong.

Subject: unable to install AdminMisc Module
Message-Id: <3b8e8bf3$1@netnews.web.de>

Hi Newsgroup,
I'm an absolute Beginner an forced to use the win32::adminmisc module. I've
installed ActiveState WIN32 Perl Version 509 and downloaded the module from CPAN
(I think Version 971022). I've followed the instructions from readme-file:

I N S T A L L A T I O N:
------------------------
If you are using the ActiveState Win32 Perl...
    1) Copy AdminMisc.pm to the <perldir>\lib\win32 directory.
    2) Create a <perldir>\lib\auto\win32\adminmisc directory.
    3) Rename AdminMisc310.pll to AdminMisc.pll and copy it to
       the <perldir>\lib\auto\win32\adminmisc directory.
*IF you are using a build of Perl that is not compliant with the
build of adminmisc that comes with this archive then you need to
download a compatible version. See "Parse Exception Error" below.
    4) You are all ready to use the module. Look at the test.pl script
       for an examples.

But all I receive is the following message:

Can't locate loadable object for module Win32::AdminMisc in @INC (@INC
contains:
 E:\Perl\lib E:\Perl\site\lib .) at netadmin.pl line 1
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at netadmin.pl line 1.

Why?

Can you please help me?

Thank You

Message-Id: <9mlvj3$65q$1@netnews.upenn.edu>

Hello All,

Before writing my own, I wonder if anyone has come across something that
performs a similar function. Basically, I would like to have a program
listening on a Unix port that can be supplied authentication information and
a user id, and would return a variety of information like quota status,
whether they have a .forward file, home directory location, etc. Granted
this is simliar to a finger daemon, but I haven't found any finger daemons
as featured as this. Is anyone doing this or have you come across a program
which does?

Thanks!

Adam Kirby

Of course he/she doesn't. "use strict" is for pointing out when we
are doing something that we (probably) don't know that we are doing.

God is infallible and so has no need for such a crutch.

>You know, that explains a lot.

Yes, that everybody except God needs strictures. heh.

Can God create a restriction so powerful that s/he cannot overcome it? :)

Let me guess, there's no cookie.pl in either of the mentioned directories?

Perhaps you want to use an appropriate 'use lib' statement.

Yes, the constants would still print so that isn't the problem. This
thing is in the middle of a huge script. I'm trying to work out a
small example to post here.

Thanks..

Clearly you have a non-fatal code error at your print stage.
Turn on warnings. This will most likely tell you what is wrong.
My experience is, this type of error, is almost always a small
syntax problem, hiding under your nose. Often, this occurs in
conjunction with an attempt to modify a read only variable or
rogue syntax accessing the last element of an array, without
using a standard [-1] syntax.

I will try to remember and replicate these odd circumstances.

OK, I'm not sure if thie helps, but here are the last portion of the
buffer contents I'm printing to a flatfile, as shown in the debugger:

\cJ*******************************************************************\cJ*\cJ*
TEST PROGRAM VERSION: 1\cI\cIVERSION: 1.0A.1\cJ* CREATED

evrything after the \cI chars vanishes in the flatfile.

HOWEVER... Now I'm runing the same code and everything is FINE again..
GRRRRRRRR What is going on?? Is it possible that TAB lengths could be
changing somehow or becoming undefined so that sometimes this works
and other times not?

Thank-You.
