=====
- A line in the body of a post is considered to be original if it
does *not* match the regular expression /^\s{0,3}(?:>|:|\S+>|\+\+)/.
- All text after the last cut line (/^-- $/) in the body is
considered to be the author's signature.
- The scanner prefers the Reply-To: header over the From: header
in determining the "real" email address and name.
- Original Content Rating (OCR) is the ratio of the original content
volume to the total body volume.

Subject: Storing Multiple RegEx Matches
Message-Id: <b27d8a7b.0107090545.e6b525d@posting.google.com>
Hi,
I'm sorry if this is a FAQ but I can't seem to find it anywhere. I am
trying to find dates in an AutoCAD file (although I'm using Linux) and
I can match the dates fine with:
=~ s/(\d\d)/\(\d\d)\/(\d\d)//g
My problem is that I want to store each of these dates and compare
them. The $1, $2, $3 variables just give me the last one (? this is
what I've gathered from reading help docs for the past hour) but I
need to store /each/ one. Any help greatly appreciated. I can't
install a module 'cause I'm not root.
Thanks a million,
Andrew

how about something like :-
$data = "01/01/99 05/07/00 03/03/01";
while($data =~ m#(\d\d/\d\d/\d\d)#g){
push(@dates, $1);
}

Then m// in enough, you do not need s///

^^
^^ transposed? Do not retype code. Use copy/paste!
Choose an alternate delimiter and you won't need to remember
to backslash stuff:
s#(\d\d)/(\d\d)/(\d\d)##g
>My problem is that I want to store each of these dates and compare
>them.
while ( $line =~ m#(\d\d)/(\d\d)/(\d\d)#g ) {
my($month, $day, $year) = ($1, $2, $3);
...

Yes you can.

That does not prevent you from installing modules. Perl FAQ part 8:

Do not use /g.
Do it in a loop, and store $1,$2, etc. in arrays.
There is no way to do that with /g.

I haven't used any regex here but I think this should do what you want.
There would doubtless be more elegant (probably 1 line) solutions.

require is compile time and $page is run time. It is very unlikely that
$page will be defined before it is required.
What one may want is
eval "require \"c:/Inetpub/wwwroot/$page\"" if defined $page;
Thus, if $page is defined, then the file refered to is require'd.
Or, how about
do "c:/Inetpub/wwwroot/$page" if defined $page;
The desired code could reside in this file and get do'ed at the right
time.

using a hash directly as in
my %hash;
to access or set a value in the hash the scalar form should be used
such as
$hash{attribute}=$value;
And that when using a reference to a hash
my $r_hash=\%hash;
the indirect notation should be used
$r_hash->{other_attrib}=$other_value;
and that
%hash->{other_attrib}=$other_value;
would be totally incorrect. Except it isn't!! The previous seems to
work just fine. Any ideas of why? And where is this documented?
Doesn't make sense to me...
Thanks in advance.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
