All anybody ever wants to see here is "I searched perlfaq4 for the
keywords 'frob' and 'quux', but didn't find anything that made sense
to me. I did read perlfunc about the floogle() function, but I didn't
understand the example code it gave..." In other words, if it looks
like you've tried, then even the touchiest people here are happy to
guide you. I'm using the word "you" here in the sense of "one", not
YOU, JEFFREY GRACE! :)

Hello all!

I was wondering whether somebody has experimented with `sticking a bit
of perl'
between two java apps (on linux btw.), e.g.

JAVA                       Simple Perl                            Java
APPLET---->socket1<--------Server---------------->socket2<--------Server

where the perl server simply relays all that comes in from the applet to
the
Java server, and vice versa. THe reason why I want to do this is long,
complicated
and horrible, so let's just treat it as an exercise :-)

I've got all the bits of code, and the various servers and applet all
recognise
eachother connecting and disconnecting, but I cannot get them to pass
any data.

Perl details: I am using IO::Socket, tcp connection, and recv/send
methods
Java details: java.net.* (serverSocket), e.g. stream.writeUTF (uses tcp
too(?))

Both the perl methods and the java methods use tcp - so what else could
there
be going wrong? (Could of course be very elementary - I am really no
network
guru!)

Just in case anybody has ever played with this kinda thing - I'd be
grateful for a posting!

Bjoern

Are you certain that your writers are flushing? Are you certain that
the various components are speaking and listening in the right order?

Subject: Slightly Off Topic question, CG forms and hidden query data fileds?
Message-Id: <94huhr$deh$1@panix2.panix.com>

I am writing a perl CGI script. This script leads teh suer through a
serries of choices, each set of choices is based upon the prvious ones.

I have this working using hidden data forms fileds, and it works well.

Now after all teh choices have been made, I intend to split the browser
window inot 2 frames, using ione to display the results of all teh input
fileds, and the other to display the resultant data retrieved from a DB.

My problem is that the forms callbacks to my script don't seem to be able
to see the hidden data fields. I am puting them in the message to the
server that draws the framest.

Is this wrong?

Can this be made to work?

I'm using CGI.pm, if it matters.

On Sun, 21 Jan 2001 15:18:30 GMT, in a place far, far away,
adelton@fi.muni.cz (Honza Pazdziora) made the phosphor on my monitor
glow in such a way as to indicate that:

>Did you try to specify Filename, as the doc shows? Since you have slash
>in Path, MIME::Lite may refuse that attach call.

No. I thought that Filename was to specify what the file would be
called when it reached the addressee's inbox.

I tried what you said, with the following code:

# Create a new multipart message:
                        $msg = new MIME::Lite
                                From    =>"$mailer",
                                To      =>"$recipient",
#                               Cc      =>"$recipient",
                                Subject =>'Contact Record Archive',
                                Type    =>'multipart/mixed';
                        # Add parts (each "attach" has same arguments
as "new"):
                        attach $msg
                                Type     =>'TEXT',
                                Data     =>"The attached file contains
your requested archive backup.";
                        attach $msg
                                Type     =>'text/plain',
                                Encoding =>'quoted-printable',
                                Path     =>"$data_directory/$file",
                                Filename =>"$file";
                        $msg->send;

This time, it sent the file data, but incorporated it into the body of
the message, not as an attachment, as follows:

************************************
Content-Disposition: inline
Content-Length: 57
Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary
Content-Type: text/plain

where the nonsense characters constitute the file data for testing
purposes.

Should I be using a different encoding scheme? What do I have to do
to force it to send the data as an attached file?

Reads to me over these past couple of years,
you good folks of this group are the trolls.
Hmm... rather hateful trolls at that.

Godzilla!

Administrivia:

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

| NOTE: The mail to news gateway, and thus the ability to submit articles
| through this service to the newsgroup, has been removed. I do not have
| time to individually vet each article to make sure that someone isn't
| abusing the service, and I no longer have any desire to waste my time
| dealing with the campus admins when some fool complains to them about an
| article that has come through the gateway instead of complaining
| to the source.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
