- A line in the body of a post is considered to be original if it
does *not* match the regular expression /^\s{0,3}(?:>|:|\S+>|\+\+)/.

considered to be the author's signature.

When I run a script in win 98
using perl 5.6
The script runs so fast you can't see the results?
There is away in dos but could some one explain in detail how to set up the
shortcut and what the command lines etc would be?
Thanks in Advance mark

It is extremely rude to post the same question at the same time in a
newsgroup with two different subject lines.

Can't say I have a lot of expertise on this topic. However
having recently installed Perl 5.6 on my Win machine and
having to overcome and correct many problems created by
this installation, I learned from another here, Randy
Harris, how to fix this screw-up by Active State, give
this method a try.
When you initially open your DOS window, you will
have a prompt for C:\windows, type in and hit Enter
each time:
cd .. (ENTER)
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PERL\BIN (ENTER)
Now return to your directory holding your script
and give it a try. This should work if you used
a default install for Active State and, set your
install directory to c:\perl rather than the usual
c:\programs\etc.. etc..
If not, change
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PERL\BIN
to reflect your actual installation path,
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\PROGRAMS\YOUR\PATH\TO\PERL\BIN
After testing this to be sure all works, add this
path statement to your autoexec.bat file and reboot.
Be sure you make a backup copy of your autoexec.bat
before you make any changes. This is critical for
system safety. Should something go wrong, reboot
into DOS, and change your autoexec.bat back to
original by renaming your backup copy.
You will discover there is zero documentation on
this problem; don't expect help from Active State.

Yes, you need help reading the English language.
> Ive opened the dos window and went to the scripts directory where my .pl
> files are and typed "test.pl" and I get bad file name or directory.
Does step #5 say to "type scriptname"? No, it says to "type perl
scriptname". In your case, you would type "perl test.pl". And if that
produces "bad command" it means that perl is not on your path and you
need to set your path which is a DOS operation so if you don't know how
to do that, look it up in a DOS manual or ask in a windoze/DOS related
newsgroup, not here.

See my previous article on a path statement.
After reading your article again, be sure
your are typing in,
perl test.pl
rather than,
test.pl
You need to preface with 'perl' to have this work.
Will you be installing a web server on your machine?
Currently I am working on installation of Perl under
an Apache web server on my machine to allow running
scripts as cgi under Apache service to avoid a need
for use of DOS to test a majority of my scripts. This
hopefully will eliminate a need to jump through so
many DOS hula hoops to run perl scripts and afford
an abilily to establish a web style interface to work
with Perl via a web browser.

If Jeff can't get back to you quickly, I thought I'd jump in before you
are corrupted by our infamous giant lizard:
That's not what he said, see below:

Type "perl scriptname, <Enter>"
On Win9x, you have to tell the OS you are using perl.exe to run your
script. On WinNT, the different command shell will let you get away with
just typing "scriptname.pl <Enter>"

I don't have any good specific advice except that you should try
showing us some code. I mostly posted because I wanted to tell you
how to type SOH.

That is a control-A character. To type it, you hold down the
'control' key and press 'a'.

While doing almost the same, I solved this with
select(STDIN); $| = 1;
select(STDOUT); $| = 1; # make unbuffered

that is meaningless. STDIN is not an output handle so $| doesn't affect
it. you can't directly control the buffering on the other side of a pipe
or socket.
A> select(STDOUT); $| = 1; # make unbuffered
if you remove the previous useless line then all you need is $| = 1.
also set $| on all sockets/pipes you create. if the other process
doesn't do proper flushing, you may never get it working. some programs
have command line options to disable block buffereing so they can
interact properly over a pipe.

Subject: using ExtUtils::Command ...
Message-Id: <39fd7c88.0@briol.cet.pt>
I want use some shell commands like copy, move, ..., but, I want use them in
a portable way, I mean, I want that my script works in Windows and in a Unix
environment too. So, I don't want use system("copy", ...) or a system("cp",
...) because is dependent of environment. So, I'm trying to use the
ExtUtils:::Command, because if I make cp("arg1","arg2"), in some how, it
will translate the cp command for "cp" in a Unix or "copy" in a Windows
environment.
Now, my problem is that I'm trying to use a cp or mv, but apparently with no
outside errors but with no effect at all ... it doesn't anything with the
files !!??
Why? What is wrong?
(I'm testing now with ActivePerl in windows)

Hi, folks, when I was trying to install GD.pm with GD-1.30.tar.gz downloaded
from CPAN, make complaint that gd.h is missing from my system, and I just
can't find it anywhere, can somone tell me where I can get it or it's just
bundled inside another module? Thanks a lot in advance.

Then the prima facie assumption is that you haven't properly installed
the gd library first. If you think this is wrong then you'd need to
post more detail of your situation.
Mine's in /usr/local/include/gd.h and it got there by installing the
gd library.
Btw, postings that are on-topic for a *.specific group are generally
considered off-topic for the *.misc group, and vice versa. I've set
narrowed f'ups.

Obviously that depends on you. If you are a high-power programmer
with lots of Unix experience learning Perl as your 15th programming
language then your requirements will be somewhat different from
someone who's only experience of programming is a few Mickey Mouse VB
programs.

Administrivia:
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
| NOTE: The mail to news gateway, and thus the ability to submit articles
| through this service to the newsgroup, has been removed. I do not have
| time to individually vet each article to make sure that someone isn't
| abusing the service, and I no longer have any desire to waste my time
| dealing with the campus admins when some fool complains to them about an
| article that has come through the gateway instead of complaining
| to the source.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
