I am running some perl scripts on an NT server provided by an ISP.
For some reason when I run a script it tries to download instead.
It only happens on one URL with scripts with an extension of .pl.
Can anybody tell me why ?
If it is possible to do this from a browser, is there any way to ensure that
my scripts are protected from downloading ?

Are you certain that this particular file is installed according to your
ISP's directions for CGI-files?

I think so.
I have also found a friend accessing from another client runs the script OK.
Looks like I've done something on my machine.

One hint could be searching this news group--
Another to take a look at some of all the web sites dedicated to perl, you
could do worse than starting out at http://www.perl.com , or you could go
tso a search service such as http://www.goggle.com and search for "perl
turorial".
Lots of options out there..

Both PAUSE and search.cpan.org use mod_perl too. In fact, PAUSE was the
first to use it IIRC.

It can be speedy but, like anything else, it totally depends on the
application it's running and the system it's running on. Overall it tends to
be a win in performance.

I am very slowly (because there are several things to learn at once
for me) learning mod_perl. (Those things are Apache, Perl, &
PostgreSQL.) I am doing this because I feel that mod_perl will beat
all other existing technologies for web development by every metric
save LOCs. I think you will end up with fewer LOCs for a given
function in most cases.
In other words, once I am proficient with Perl, I should be able to
implement any idea I come up with fairly rapidly and with good
performance to boot.
I've got the Perl Mongers site bookmarked. Once I have a chance, I
will get myself into a users group. I will also be lurking here with
the occasional outbursts of stupidity. Like now.

Anyone that wants Perl Certification may receive one by send me a
numismatic item with the number 20 appearing on at least one face
and a self addressed stamped envelope.
Your certificate will be printed on low quality laser print paper,
or any 8.5x11 inch paper that you provide and is compatible with my printer,
The text below will appear in a formal serif font over a fake
watermark representation of the unofficial seal of the Secret
Society for the Creation and Preservation of Artificial Complexity:
Let it be known that $Name has qualified as $Level in $Field
by the rigorous standards of the SSCPAC and is hereby granted
all privilege and responsibility that this certification endows.
Signed__$Signatureimage___________ Date__$Date___
$Signaturentext
Your certificate will arrive endorsed with a facsimile signature
of one of this nations founding fathers. All variable fields are
at the discretion of the requester (within the bounds of good taste,
as judged by me). Allow 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.
Please contact me via e-mail for more details.

Hello all,
can any one help me with this one?
I need to somehow flush the input buffer immediately before I ask for a
password,
so that when I read the input, I only get what is typed after the prompt
is output.
This is for an install script for a database ap. which if is not
supplied with uname and
passwd, will default to the current EUID and ask for their pg password.
The sleep is
there so that I can enter chars into the buffer while I try to get this
to work.
sub askForPass{
my( $key, $pass );
sleep 5;
ReadMode 2;
while( defined( $key = ReadKey( -1 ) ) ){
# I hoped this would clear it, but, no.
}
#my $term = Term::ReadLine->new();
#$term->OUT;
print "Enter postgres password for $USERNAME:";
until( ( $key = ReadKey( 0 ) ) eq "\n" ){
$pass .= $key;
}
#$pass = ReadLine 0;
#$pass = $term->readline( "Enter postgres password for $USERNAME:" );
ReadMode 0;
print "\n$pass\n";
}
Thanks in advance for any help,
Bap.

The OP asked a simple question, thanked everyone for the replies, posted

argumentative or malicious in his posts. Now I do believe that you think he

Well tarnation, Ollie. What type of yo-yo do you
take me to be? A stringless yo-yo?
* walks the dog with her yo-yo *
What a dolt you are Ollie. Easy enough to see I am a
talented yo-yo woman, often simply called "Yo Woman!"
* rocks the cradle with her yo-yo *
I have a string, Ollie, and wax it well with bee's wax.
* goes around the world with her yo-yo *
Look at this, Ollie. A Duncan yo-yo, the best made.
* does a shooting star smacking Ollie on his forehead *
Mine is an awesome and talented yo-yo perfect for stringing

It probably means that they are using an ancient version of CGI.pm.
AFAIK, all recent versions of CGI.pm come with CGI::Cookie as part of
it. You could ask them to update their version of CGI.pm (using as an
inticement the fact that there are known security hazards in older
versions of the module), or you could install it yourself in your own
directory. You could do that with only FTP access since the module does
not require compilation. See perlfaq8 "How do I keep my own
module/library directory" for details.

I'm tieing an array...
############################################################
SV *
SpecialInsert(Array, Index, Value)
############################################################
PREINIT:
SV ** psv = 0;
INPUT:
void * Array
long Index
SV * Value
CODE:
printf("SV = 0x%08x, undef = 0x%08x\n", Value, &PL_sv_undef);
psv = (SV **)SpecialInsert(&Array, Index);
[...]
In the .pm...
sub STORE {
my ($self, $index, $value) = @_;
my $ref = SpecialInsert($self->{A}, $index, $value);
return $value;
}
The test code..
{
my @a;
tie @a, 'Special';
$_ = 0;
$a[$_] = undef;
undef $a[$_];
my $b;
$a[$_] = $b;
$b = "foooooo!";
$a[$_] = $b;
}
Output...
SV = 0x4003b798, undef = 0x4000f368
SV = 0x4003b798, undef = 0x4000f368
SV = 0x4003b798, undef = 0x4000f368
SV = 0x4003b798, undef = 0x4000f368
It seems to make sense to me that the 'SV *Value' not be equal to
&PL_sv_undef... SV *Value should only be a copy of PL_sv_undef.

Maybe that only works for missing parameters? Or when SV *foo is
explicitly set to &PL_sv_undef?
