Not bad, but $line =~ s/(\w+)/\u\L$1/g seems prettier (probably because
it's simpler).

Thank you thank you thank you...
I knew there was something simpler than what I had...I just didn't hit on
it.

I am afraid I have to disappoint you there. I have not yet
met such a guestbook, but I would be happy to try one which
you promise to crash my system.
Could I have an URL please?

Could you explain exactly what problem you're having? In your
previous message, you posted the code you're asking for above,
so you already have it. Here it is, quoted from your message
(the one that started this thread):
: use CGI 'param';
: $form_type=param('form_type');

I gave you the code in my previous post; this is how split works:
$Variable = "blabla=yada";
#you want "blabla" and "yada" split up:
@Array = SPLIT(/=/$Variable);
#This splits up $Variable at the "=" sign.
#Now both "blabla" and "yada" are stored in @Array
print $Array[0],"\n";
print $Array[1];
this outputs:
blabla
yada

This won't compile. 'SPLIT' is not a perl function. 'split' is. Also,
your arguments to split must be seperated by a comma.

You obviously didn't test this.
There's also much more to split than meets the eye of this casual
observer. Try perldoc -f split for something more complete.

it does no such thing .. the above produces the syntax error
Scalar found where operator expected
and even if you fix up your missing comma .. SPLIT() is not a Perl
function .. split() is .. so
@Array = SPLIT(/=/,$Variable);
produces the runtime error
Undefined subroutine &main::SPLIT called
and even if you fix BOTH of those errors your code your post was
completely out of place .. the originator was already successfully using
the standard CGI module to retrieve the query values .. something that
you would do well to learn
(ie. the originator's code is far superior to your own split() solution
- stop trying to teach on this topic and begin learning)

No difference, it only maters whether your server is set up to recognize
the extensions...then you decide the extension, so to convert the file,
just change the extension...

"in advance" is right !!
in the absence of any code or real explanation of what you're doing -
here's a diagnostic clue -> in your browser - view the source of both
the original HTML form and the form that your code generates - there
will almost certainly be some obvious differences - either in the INPUT
field names or in the FORM tag details

I am trying to learn Perl on Win 32 but the glob function won't work. Here
is the code. Any ideas?
sub init_words {
while (defined ($filename = glob('*.sec'))) {
open (WORDSLIST, $filename) ||
die "can't open wordslist: $!";
if (-M WORDSLIST > 7.0) { # Comply with bureaucratic policy
while (defined ($name = <WORDSLIST>)) {
chomp ($name);
$word = <WORDSLIST>;
chomp ($word);
$words{$name} = $word;
}
}
close (WORDSLIST) || die "couldn't close wordlist: $!";
}
}

Kinda gathered that from your subject. Here's a hint: Alot of people
won't read your message because you didn't select a meaningfull subject.
Next time, make sure the subject actually indicates the nature of the
problem, not of your individual circumstances.

You mean file.

I hope you are ending this with a newline.

Why are you calling your sub in this manner if you aren't passing it
any values?

DATA, as a filehandle, has special meaning. Best not to use it in
this case.

I think its better to chomp the entries here, instead of when
reading them back out of the array:
chomp(@datafile = <DATA>);
>
> close(DATA);
>

> my $counter = 0;
Why not take the value of counter as input to the sub, instead of
hard coding it?

What is &write? did you mean &write_data?

Well, I can think of a couple ways to display only n lines at a time,
but what I don't see in this script is a way for the program to know
_when_ to display the next ten lines. Is this a CGI script? If so,
maybe you could include a hidden field with the value of the last line
printed and then alter $start_num based on that value. If this is
going to be viewed from command line or via some other manner, you'll
be needing to add some code.
Right now, $counter is hardcoded at 0. If you want to allow subsequent
lines to be viewed, you'll need some way to override the 0 value in
$start_num from some as yet undetermined source.

Administrivia:
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
| NOTE: The mail to news gateway, and thus the ability to submit articles
| through this service to the newsgroup, has been removed. I do not have
| time to individually vet each article to make sure that someone isn't
| abusing the service, and I no longer have any desire to waste my time
| dealing with the campus admins when some fool complains to them about an
| article that has come through the gateway instead of complaining
| to the source.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
