Er, sorry ? This is precisely opposite to the point Elaine was making.
I dont believe anyones gender, or the gender that they portray themselves
as, is important here; nor are any of the other things that might
arbitrarily distinguish any individual from another except for the quality
of their utterances here.
Please dont engage in this nonsense, it doesnt serve the cause.

Message-Id: <3944229E.B772FCB@eleganceintime.com>
Hello,
(Thanks to all for the array slice pointer)
Well, in order to use the Napster module
sample from TPJ I needed to install the
threaded version of perl.
I decided to use this occasion to upgrade from
5.00503 to 5.6 with threads.
The build went fine, but I find that rebuilding all
the modules that I had added to my system in the
past has run into problems.
For the module IO-1.20, I found that the "perl Makefile.PL"
stage like my setup, but the following "make all" failed with
this error:
========================
[chahn@lazarus IO-1.20]$ make all

Now does this indicate that I need a new version of this module?
(I will look...)
Or that I am seeing a failure of the threaded version of perl?

"Unique"? What, you couldn't come up with any better adjective?
But I downloaded one of the free ones, and if it's at all representative,
there's not much good to say about those scripts. It didn't use warnings,
didn't use 'use strict', didn't use CGI.pm (and mis-parses form data with
its botched code), uses only global variables - and that was just in the
first couple of screenfuls of text before I quit reading.
Oh, well!

Message-Id: <sk7tmh8gh51103@corp.supernews.com>
In a CGI script, i am dynamically creating names for checkboxes using a
counter i.e. calling it box$i where $i is my counter. This works fine,
but i cant find a way to retrieve it after being passed to the newly
created CGI object:
for ($w=0;$w < $thismany;$w++)
{
$check = $q->param('res$w');
print $check;
}
This loop is supposed to reallocate the checkbox values one by one into
$check, but when i run the script i get a blank screen. My problem is
that the $q->param('res$w') call doesnt seem to like me putting a perl
varible inside the param() part. Is there anyway i can regenerate these
checkbox numbers again, because i am stumped.

But he needs a "list slice" not an "array slice", since his

Because that is where the real money is and where the bulk of the
programmers work. The rest is a cottage industry, which may not amount
to much in the long run.
I feel personally the lack of corporate interest from Hewlett-Packard
toward Perl, which affects the value others may perceive in my work. As
an example of this corporate disdain, to this day HP-UX ships with perl
4.036 installed, probably for the same reason that it ships with a
brain-damaged C compiler -- necessary to build and maintain the
operating system.
HP makes money by selling an ANSI C compiler, but they couldn't make
money from Perl. So Perl is of so little importance to them that no one
has bothered to replace 4.036 with a modern Perl (which could be used
just as well as the primitive version for internal purposes). So users
of HP-UX must buy the HP ANSI C compiler or install gcc themselves, then
build perl themselves. I consider this to be a significant inhibitor
for Perl use on this platform.
If HP encouraged its programmers to use Perl in their work, all this
indifference might change. But that would require a change in the
public or corporate perception of Perl, with which you seem to be
completly satisfied.

Is there anyway to estimate how much memory a module should resonably
take when 'use'ed? Is there some kind of formula I can use to determine
this?
For instance, if I have X scalars, Y hashes, and Z arrays, plus A 'while
loops' and B 'if statements', composing M lines, is there some way I can
use that information to arrive at the size of the compiled code, before
I actually start calling the subroutines in a module?
Thanks!

In general, no. It may even differ from one release of Perl to the next,
and certainly it'll be different on different machines. If it's an issue,
you should probably buy more memory. :-)
Cheers!

if you use ActiveState's Perl then you should check the included HTML
documentation .. it covers this well

Perhaps you might have not quoted the whole thing then eh ?

Maybe you want Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. They wrote a script, and look
how much it helped them! Of course, they probably knew where to put an
apostrophe.

Well, that's nice to know. Of course, there are hundreds of us who _might_
do work for you. I, in particular, _might_ do thousands of dollars of work
for you. I doubt it, but I might. And you'll pay for it! What great guys.

Too drunk to do it yourselves? We've all been there, man.

That, is a shame. He should, have thought of that, before he started on
the design. Does he know though, where to put commas, to make an
appositive?

Oooh, tough one. But he got the data records to work without that, right?

It's tough to make a program send an auto.

I can help you. Are you still willing to pay me if I won't? :-)

Why? You haven't learned to read Usenet yet?

How many copies am I supposed to send? My head hurts. I think I'm going to
take a nap.

That's good that you're checking the return from open(), but I don't see
why you're using an empty string as the error message. Generally code like
this should be better:
open INF, $inf
or die "Can't open '$inf' for input: $!";
> while(<INF>) {
>
> if ( $_ =~ "field1" ) {
Do you mean to use 'eq' there for string equality instead of pattern
matching? Of course, that would nearly always be false, unless you chomp()
first. If you mean a pattern match, though, maybe you should write a
normal pattern match. It's not normal to use a string as a pattern, even
though Perl allows it.
> ($field1token, $field1value) = split(/\:/);
Perhaps you meant for these to be my() variables. But, from the way you
describe your data, I think you may want something like this:
my @data;
while (<INF>) {
if (/^field(\d)\s*:\s*(.*)/) {
$data[$1] = $2;
} else {
die "unrecognized input line: $_";
}
}
Good luck with it!

you should put your query in the body of your post even if it is short
enough to fit in the subject.
from perlre:
A word boundary (\b) is defined as a spot between two
characters that has a \w on one side of it and a \W on the
other side of it (in either order), counting the imaginary
characters off the beginning and end of the string as
matching a \W.
note that the ordering doesn't matter (regexes in other systems can
force the ordering. read mastering regular expressions).
so \b\+\b (good that you escaped the +, \b+ makes no sense) will match
'x+y' since there are two word boundaries surrounding the +.
++ fails since there is no word chars anywhere and the same for +. as the
docs say above, the string ends are considered to be \W.

Perhaps you should check in newsgroups about those operating systems. Of
course, the character sets don't have anything to do with Perl in
particular; the transliteration tables are the same whether you use Perl
or some other language to do the work. Cheers!
