Why 'outdated' ? Sure the requirement for parentheses has been *relaxed*
but their use is not deprecated (or even sneered at by regulars here :)
I tend to use the parentheses most of the time ...

libnet *does not* have a module net::ftp in it - it is Net::FTP the case

use CGI qw(:standard);

my $whatever = param('whatever');

I would go back and look at the manpage for CGI.pm

You should check the success of your call to stat() and print the value
of $! on failure as this will give you some indication of what is going
on - I am fairly certain that it is the stat that is failing rather than
the date simply being wrong. Can you perform other operations on these
files ?

Unix time is counted in seconds since that time.

in case that format _is_ important, how about:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w
use strict;
my($n,$m,$d,$t,$y)=(split(/ +/,scalar gmtime(time+60*60)));
printf "one hour from now is \"%3s, %02d-%3s-%4d %8s GMT\"",($n,$d,$m,$y,$t);

cheers

big

(or, if you really need the seconds to read "00", put:
chop $t;chop $t;$t.='00';
between the "my($n" line and the "printf" line :-)

That's what I was asking about: *where* does it do that? Certainly not in

Ah yes. And what *is* that promise I'd be making?

What *is* a "typed lexical variable"? Where is that term defined?

Sure looks to me like someone invented a new feature and neglected to
write the documentation for it.

Which version of Perl? Most NT versions I've seen set registry entries
which indicate where the libraries are (as indicated by the INC array). You
might want to try the following script which displays a (poorly formatted)
display of the "in-build" INC path (i.e. that which is set by the registry
on some versions).

--- Script start ---
{
  print @INC, "\n";
}
--- Script end ---

You may also want to use "regedit" to search for "perl" through the registry
on the network server (I presume you "properly" installed onto the Network
server rather than just copied files :-) ). When you find the registry
entries you then need to copy these to each client, changing the drive/path
as appropriate to match your Net shares.

Hope this helps,
Paul DS.

If you did have to, would: C<eval <<'ENDOFCODE';> do the trick (so
long as the eval'd code doesn't define subs with lexicals)?

Subject: Please Help!!! Writing data file on Two Unix Servers...
Message-Id: <8h7mf5$56f$1@nnrp1.deja.com>

Hi,

I have a CGI perl script on an external unix server outside
the firewall that records data of a web survey into a flat file.

I have to record the data simultaniously into another file
on an internal unix server behind the firewall.

I thought of two options. But, none of them is feasible.

1. I can mount the disk if both servers are either inside or
outside the firewall. But I can't do this with a firewall in
between.

2. I can have a cron job that FTPs the data file from the external
machine into the internal unix server. But for this I will have to
hard code the username/password in the perl script. Because
this script resides in external server this is not acceptable for
security reasons.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

For a command line mailer, try Blat. We use it quite extensively on our NT

Here's where to download it from:

Hope this is of use.

Not really a perl question, but...

The cookie spec <http://www.netscape.com/newsref/std/cookie_spec.html> says:

which is _not_ what $expiry looks like.

Have a look at a post of mine in a thread titled "code cleanup" today.

I've only just realised what the original poster was trying to do.

If I'd known then, my solution would have been:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w
use strict;

use CGI;

my $query=new CGI;

my $name='Iain';
my $lastvisit='never';

my $cookie1=$query->cookie(-name=>'name',
                        -value=>$name,
                        -expires=>'+2h');

my $cookie2=$query->cookie(-name=>'auth',
                        -value=>$lastvisit,
                        -expires=>'+2h');

print $query->header(-cookie=>[$cookie1,$cookie2]);

There was a nine minute delay between your two postings.

Were you wondering whether there could be perl 5.7 with the use of
$EURO_SIGN that now appears on some keyboards, which would be nice as its on
the same key as $.

by the way, what is the shift and backquote thingy (¬) supposed to be
anyway. I have read that it is 'not' , something that I have never come
across before.

Terribly off-topic. but who cares? (I think I know the anser to this
question actually)

With that version simply deleting perl.exe and removing its location
from your PATH should be sufficient.

My company is thinking of setting up a web-based email system (similar to
Hotmail,Yahoo etc.). How can we start to build such a system (using Linux)?

* Is it simply a case of setting up a new user account for everybody that
subscribes? Then, the mail is sent to /home/username/mail?
* Any special sendmail.conf required?
* Any web resources/code out there. Maybe we could do it using Perl?

Thanks

Sure.  Go to:

http://patriot.net/~carvdawg/perl.html

There is a zipped archive called 'Listen.zip'...it's several scripts
that make up a
multi-threaded port listener. One of the included scripts,
'listen_driver2.pl', contains
verified working code for writing to the EventLog. It uses
Win32::Lanman, so if you
MUST have it in Win32::EventLog, let me know...I can work something up..

I'm not sure what you mean by 'works only in cmd prompt mode'. If
you mean that it doesnt work when you use it in a CGI program then what
you have is a server configuration issue and you will want to ask in
some Windows group about configuring your system so that the appropriate
user can use the resources required.

You might also look at the module Win32::OLE - there is an example of
using this to control a MAPI object in the ActiveState documentation.

Of course Exchange can be made to support these things - but you would
have to ask in the appropriate group about this.

Administrivia:

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

| NOTE: The mail to news gateway, and thus the ability to submit articles
| through this service to the newsgroup, has been removed. I do not have

| abusing the service, and I no longer have any desire to waste my time
| dealing with the campus admins when some fool complains to them about an
| article that has come through the gateway instead of complaining
| to the source.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
