Everybody should reply the original mail so it won't happen again. You could

I've reached the 2GB file limitations using perl 5.004_04 on HP/UX
10.2. I have found that 10.2 does support 64 bit operations. What is
the proper way to compile perl to take advantage of this?

Try using the s switch in your regexp to span multiple lines.

$text=~s/<--[^-->]*-->/\n/gs;

That is a fairly mindless answer. The '/s' modifier affects *only* the
interpretation of the '.' metacharacter in a regex, and there aren't any
of those in there, are there?

if you are going to do that why dont you slurp all of the text in the
file into the variable in the first place.

I am looking for the expression or script that will automate an Email
mailing.

Example: my customers fill out a form. The form goes to my cgi/perl script.
The information gets entered into my flat file,

No I want an automatic Email to go to the customer and say..... whatever....
thankyou... your information has been processed.

All I have seen is scripts that invoke the Email program for the user...
This is not what I want.
I want an Email sent automatically from my PERL script.

Thanks

With respect, do you really think it's necessary or productive to read
out this elementary part of the documentation?

If the Hon Usenaut hasn't found this for themselves yet (which might be
perfectly understandable in a beginner), I'd have thought the first
priority was to help them to understand how to find things in the
comprehensive available documentation, so that they can make their own
great leap forwards; rather than reading the specific bit out to them
(without even showing them where you found it, IINM), and leaving them
only ready to come back with their next request for reading practice.

IMHO, of course.

   I'm trying to get the hostname from an IP address.

My webhost does have the "hostname" and "socket" modules installed.

The OS is: UNIX Type: L8(SCO UNIX Release 3.2v5.0.5, on Pentium)

Perl Version: version 5.004_04 built for i486-pc-sco3.2v5.0

#!/usr/bin/perl

use Socket;
use Sys::Hostname;

$ip = '203.120.90.111';

$host_name = gethostbyaddr(inet_aton($ip),AF_INET)||
                      die "Could not find host:  $!\n";

print $host_name;

The script just dies.

But it works fine on my Win32 machine.
What's wrong?

Thanks,

Sorry I think you must have made a typo when you entered the newsgroup
you wanted to post to.

What *you* need is to not post things like this in groups not
containing the word 'jobs'.

Please don't do that again.

No you're not you are using Perl 5.003 and I would recommend that you
upgrade to 5.005 which will have both of those modules ... Normally
one would get modules from CPAN <http://www.cpan.org> of course.

The people who would have an idea are more likely to read a group with
the word 'browser' in the name.

If you want to know about lock down you ought to ask Staffordshire Social
Services - alternatively you might want to use one of the wonderful
searching engines that I hear are available on the internet these days ...

I wrote a basic perl script to change file permissions in Unix.
The program works fine when I call it from my Unix command
line however when I call it from a web page it doesn't work.

Any suggestions

I wouldnt say so - you arent checking for the success of the file opens
and you are not using any locking on your files so this will almost
certainly fail in a multiuser environment (which the CGI is by definition).

If there is a DBD module available it should be available at CPAN :

You may be interested in Halfbrain.com. They just introduced the first
DHTML spreadsheet application called BrainMatter. You can import and
export Excel 2000 or build your own online with their new application.

Below is more detail . . .

      - Don

Halfbrain has built hundreds of spreadsheets and calculators that solve
day-to-day problems and deliver information that people obsess about:

  Personal finances, home, diet, sports, travel, education, stock
  options, interest rates, children, real estate, college savings,
  retirement, expenses, business forms and so much more.

Halfbrain.com is developing powerful and easy-to-use web-based
productivity software. Their programs are written in Dynamic HTML, so
you never have to worry about downloading plug-ins, Java, or about
system and DLL conflicts. Their first product, BrainMatter, is a full-
featured spreadsheet program that runs entirely within a Web browser.

Halfbrain members receive the following benefits:

- Draw from a huge, growing library of tools, pre-programmed templates
  spreadsheets and calculators.
- Access calculators and personal files from any computer connected to
  the Internet.
- Easily share files with colleagues and friends
- Incorporate live data, such as stock quotes, into spreadsheets.
- Never worry about backing up files.
- Easily embed a calculator within your web pages.
- Always have the most recent version of the software.
- Never need to worry about installing or upgrading your application.

You can get started with the Halfbrain beta by going directly to

http://www.HALFBRAIN.com/

Administrivia:

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup

the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

| NOTE: The mail to news gateway, and thus the ability to submit articles
| through this service to the newsgroup, has been removed. I do not have

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
