Maybe you looked in the right place in the Perl docs, too.
This is not a Perl error message. I believe this is IIS
complaining. So it's presumably a server config problem.
Look in the ActiveState [win32] FAQ under 'web server config'
for info on IIS. If that isn't enough, you may have to hit
the MS Knowledge Base or one of the MS server newsgroups.
Good luck,

Now that you've been chewed on for asking this in the wrong
newsgroup, you're problaby not very receptive. But here's a
suggestion. IIS3 has specific requirements about directories.
Check the IIS docs, and if that doesn't help enough, try one
of the newsgroups which deal with MS servers, and/or with IIS
specifically.

Yes, and the FAQ specifically says that IT DOES NOT WORK ALL
THE TIME. So this may not be good advice. Recommending the
FAQ *is* good advice though. In general, regexen are not a
good idea when parsing is required.
Next time, please put your reply *after* the original post.
That permits the continuation of proper threads. It's also

Hi all. I am a PERL newbie and am trying to remove all occurrences of a
given string (in this case 'the ') from another string. So far the best I
have come up with is:
$input = join("", split(/the /,$input));
This seems like an unholy kludge to me though, and I suspect there is a
function somewhere that will let me do it in a tidier fashion. I've had a
look through the manpages and the FAQs on this NG and can't find anything
though.
TIA,

The s/ubsti/tution/ operator is your friend, then.
my $sentence = "The thesaurus that Theo gave to the man is there.";
$sentence =~ s/\bthe\b//ig; # \b is for word boundary
# g is for global (i.e., remove all occurances)
# i is for case-insensitive (to remove
# The, the, THE, etc)
# $sentence is now " thesaurus that Theo gave to man is there."
perldoc perlop will tell you a lot more about that wonder thing
s/// is.

Subject: Running shell commands via CGI script
Message-Id: <382B69AB.8AC024E1@techie.com>
Before someone starts yelling at me about a security risk, I want to
mention that what I want to accomplish is only for internal networks so
no outsider will ever see it. I've tried with bigger or smaller
success to utilize Linux's shell capabilities via a web interface. One
of them is "ping." Simple command in itself. So, I've written a few
shells scripts (BASH) which I've been using as either a CGI or SSI.
I don't have any problems using "ping" via SSI where I simply execute
the ping -c 3 $somelocation without user input. It has its merits
especially if one want to check the same others over and over again and
has a hard time to remember it. Creating a simple link to a SSI web
page which would execute a BASH script ping the location, was a perfect
solution. I get a control over what I want to test and live results
returned by my BASH script. However, now I would like to take it a step
further and I'd rather have now a user input the location for pinging.
That's when I ran into a road block. I'm not sure how I can pass a
value from a form input field into my BASH script. So I turned to
PERL (as a matter of fact, I just started it so I'm sure there is plenty
I don't know about it).
So far I've tried to use open() and system() calls to use the ping
command being passed by the shell. So my line would look something like
this:
system("/bin/ping -c3 $userInput"). I have a problem, though. It
doesn't show the whole pinging process but only its final result. How
can one do it so it displays the whole thing? I would really appreciate
any pointers or maybe even an example (the best way to learn) :-);
Thanks!

write a script x.pl and use it like this.
To make sure that no IP address is counted twice
make them keys of a hash. The values in the hash
is not our concern.
cat *s.log | x.pl
-- inside x.pl --
my $hash = {} ;
while ( <> )
{
my ( undef, undef, $ip_address ) = spit ( ',', $_); # read third
column from each line by splitting on comma
$ip_address =~s/(^\s+|\s+$)//g ; # remove white space.
$hash -> {$ip } = 'x' ; # you could use a count here to find the
number of occurences. !!
}
print " unique IP addresses found are \n" ;
print join ( "\n", keys %$hash ) ;

The s operator returns the number of substitutions. Of course if the
string is the same after one or more substitutions there's a
philosophical question whether the string was changed or not...
$x = "abc def abc";
if ($y = ($x =~ s/abc/xyz/g) ) {

Just look up locking in the docs. Try these commands:
perldoc -q \block
perldoc -f flock
flock() works on NT.

So the problem is most likely getting your web server config
correct. That sounds like a post for one of the server
newsgroups. There is at least one specifically for PWS.

Your script is straight from the MS KnowledgeBase? Yuck.
I would think that MS would have heard of here-docs by now.

Abigail has posted plenty of far more nefarious slabs of Perl

Well I use PPM at home however, it won't work at work. I have configured

home then do a directory comparison between my work and home pc to determine

I'm fairly new to Perl and the module installation is all confusing for me.

"doesn't work" isn't very descriptive. Could you be more
specific? Did you use the -w flag and 'use strict' to get
better error messages? Did you use the exact code above without
specifying a directory for the $rootFolder using CSIDL naming
conventions for the constants? Do you have Lazy.pm installed

As you can see, there are a lot of things that can go wrong

| NOTE: The mail to news gateway, and thus the ability to submit articles
| through this service to the newsgroup, has been removed. I do not have
| time to individually vet each article to make sure that someone isn't
| abusing the service, and I no longer have any desire to waste my time
| dealing with the campus admins when some fool complains to them about an
| article that has come through the gateway instead of complaining
| to the source.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
