Of course I *could* simply post the whole Net::FTP manpage but I think
that it might be better if you read the version on your own computer, if
then you still have a problem then you might post a small snippet of code
that you are having trouble with.

But that's no reason to post your message twice, is it ?

For the rest, have a look at CPAN - Net::FTP is hidden in libnet.

Once you install Net::FTP, type 'perldoc Net::FTP' and it will tell you
far more than I know about it.

Hello,
I've been looking around the web in various Perl resources and depositories of
Perl scripts for a program that allows users to create accounts with their own
passwords and user data, and that is secure, basically like what you would need
for a website that provides a customized service like My Yahoo and allows users
to set what they want to keep track of and make changes...can't find anything.
Does anybody know where I can find such a script. Is there a reason that this isn't
done in Perl? I assume you need to set cookies, and have encryptable password login,
but that seems to be the only hard parts, right?
Thanks for any info.

it can be done in Perl, but it's not the sort of thing that is
typically available for free.

Message-Id: <8048gf$bco$1@nnrp1.deja.com>

Where can I find a copy of this FAQ? I looked all
over perl.com -- the closest I could find was a
link on the page
http://www.perl.com/CPAN-local/doc/FAQs/FAQ/html/i
ndex.html. The link is labelled "Perl for Win32
FAQ from Evangelo Prodromou", but the address it
points to is not accessible (the server has no DNS
entry).

Where else can I find it?

Also, are the Net::SMTP and Mail::Sendmail
standard parts of Win NT Perl installs, or will I
have to find them and install them myself?

(I'm trying to port perl CGI scripts from a unix
to an NT server -- a client has switched hosting
services. I detest NT.)

Thanks for any help.

If you have the ActiveState version of Perl, it's on your hard disk. If
not, go to www.activestate.com (which is exactly where perl.com sends

It didn't match it -- it just left it unchanged, because it didn't
match the LHS. If you change the RHS from $1 to nothing at all, you'll
still have ">.

'cause the substiute is only operating on what it *does* match - because
you have left out the trailing characters these are unaffected and remain
in the string - you could put "> in the regular expression to match the
entire string or not use a substiturion at all and do :

    $str =~ /^<a href="([^"]+)/ && $str = $1;

Of course I am not advocating the use of a regular expression to do this
sort of stuff and certainly not one as simple as this - there was a recent
thread that went into this in some depth. I would use HTML::LinkExtor
in the spirit of laziness.

This is a two-pass solution:
1. install Linux.
2. use crypt().

What is the link command line that produced this executable on machine
1? Is it different from the link command line that produced it on
machine 2?

You should look and see if you have an old libperl.so lying around in
one of the -L directories on machine 2. Obviously a lot of libraries
here are linked dynamically that before were either not linked or were
linked statically.

how to reset scripts under mod_perl?

i have an account on a werbserver supporting mod_perl,
but i have no access to the mod_perl's config. so the
questions is now, after uploading some updated scripts,
how can i tell mod_perl to remove the old cached script
versions? ("PerlFreshRestart On" returns only errors)
can this done by perl5 code?

thanks for any help,

You might be better served in asking this question in the newsgroup
comp.infosystems.www.servers.unix where they talk about the configuration
of the Apache server.

Hey you,

i think this is something wich everyone would need. I always wanted to
control
my music via a perl program. This should be a suggestion for you to
write some-
thing like this.

Or is their a possible interface to winamp ?

Subject: multiple problems with a large file
Message-Id: <800qdv$5co$1@nnrp1.deja.com>

I have a perl script I translated from a basic program I wrote which
creates gif files from bitmap files and user specified text. When using
the use strict I get the error "global variable requires explicit
package name" for each global variable. I understand I can fix that by
using $main::variablename, however, I was wondering if there was a way
to tell the interpreter that all global variables belong to the current
file (package). Especially since it doesn't call any other modules.

Also, if you remove the use strict, then the script doesn't report any
errors, but doesn't do anything either. Is this problem also due to lack
of explicit package names for the global variables?

If you need to see the source, it is at
http://www.seidata.com/~bweber/makgif.htm

NOTE: I did not post the code here, as it almost 500 lines, and I don't
think that the problem requires the code to be solved, but I
could be wrong (and very possibly am).

Thanks, in advance for any help, and feel free to comment on other
problems that you may find in the code.

Are you sure? I get, for example:
"Global symbol "$x" requires explicit package name at - line 2."

Anyway,

typing perldoc strict will tell you the answer
typing perldoc vars will tell you more.

Well, ok, just a quick peek:

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

use strict includes use strict 'refs'.
You should learn about using my() on variables for local scoping.

In the future you might consider using CGI.pm. It makes life much
easier but it does add a little bulk.

People here will say ALWAYS check the retrun value of open().

style point:  if ( $DEBUG_FLAG ) {

use vars qw($calar_global @rray_global %ash_global);

The point of use strict 'vars' is to force you to declare your
variables lexical with 'my'. So my them and you will be happy.

This problem is due to a bug in your program. using strict makes
finding bugs easier, and prevents you from writing some bugs. But not
being 'use strict'-conformant does not, in itself, make your program
not work.

What do you mean by "doesn't do anything"? Is it supposed to create a
file that it doesn't create? (Check where it's opening the file to see
if (a) that line of code gets run and (b) the open succeeds.) Is it
supposed to print output on standard out, or to a file, but it
doesn't? (Check where it's emitting the output to see if (a) that line
of code gets run and (b) what it's trying to output is nonempty. For
giggles, you can check to see if it fails too, but that usually only
happens when your disk fills up.)

Good luck! If you figure out which part of the code is failing, and
it's less than 20 lines or so, feel free to post it.

Why?

There are a lot of perfectly good solutions out there, use them. You're
not qualified to mess around with this stuff (neither am I), and will do a
dangerous and poor job of it.

(I mean it, please don't do this.)

Go study the sources for such things as the crypt() function in Unix or
one of the encryption modules on CPAN (such as MD5 or RC5) if you really
want to learn how this is done.

You seem to be at UCLA, I'm sure their library has a lot of good books on
cryptography. I'd start there, instead of the web, to learn the basics.
