Oh lord, the "C" word is everywhere on that site.

Make sure that the path on the #! line of your script matches the path
to perl on your machine.

That doesn't do anything to teach people algorithms, nor is

And it did. I see now (as always?) after I set that one up that it
was almost impossible to answer. Let me pose the problem another, more
general way. And yes, I just ordered the OO Perl..:) The use of numbers to
show multiple objects was a bad choice on my part. I should have chosen
something like names (fred, barney, alice, ...) but the result is the
same. How to name objects of the same class on the fly, have them all
exist at run time, and access data from each other.
I am (this close) to creating the equivelent of an SQL-ish table
in perl that exists only when the program is running. That very broad
statement said, here's the goal:
I'd like to have multiple objects in memory at a time. Each
'instantiation' will have multiple, same, attributes. I will not know
ahead of time what each object's name will be, but I have the name and all
values ready to go once the object is made.
While still at run time I'll be loading these objects up, changing
values in them and ultimately either releasing them or allowing perl's
cleanup to do the trick. It is essential that one object be able to
reference another at run time. Ultimately, this information is dumped from
the group of objects into files and/or a database.
So when I said SQL-ish, I meant that one record could be compared
to another-or in the perl case one object against another.
My problem so far has been the simple act of naming objects (this
is where the 'anonymous' came in) and then retrieving the values they
hold. Again, all objects will have the same type and amount of items they
are string data for.
Again, my appologies for being so evasive initially.
TIA!
(and look.. no useless code snippets! :))

You must think most people have a very low opinion of perl if you think
they keep it in a directory called 'cloacal'. :)

I am working on a perl script that generates a list of options that
people
can select with radio buttons. Without perl, this is a very simple HTML
page that sends info to another perl script and processes the
information.
The function of the program is this: I am running a fantasy football
league,
and I am writing a program that will perform free agent transactions.
The
players are stored in .txt files that are read when the script runs.
Each
file is written into a hash that spits the keys out (which are just
names)
in the form of radio buttons that allows the user to pick just one
player
from each group. When the players are selected and the submit button is
pressed, the swap.pl script exchanges the players in the hashes and
prints
the new list of free agents and the team with it's new player.
Everything works pretty good up until the point I have to submit the
info.
When you press the button, the selection screen refreshes and a "?"
appears
by the address of the page:
ex: ...server/temp/trans.pl --> ...server/temp/trans.pl?
^^
I've tried dozens of options trying to get this to run, but the
interaction
of PERL and HTML seems random sometimes.
ex: In order for the submit button to work I had to enclose it with
the
<FORM></FORM> set. print "<FORM>";
print "<INPUT...";
print "</FORM>";
This is not necessary in normal HTML.
As a result I'm not sure whether my problem with the action line is
simply a
path problem or a perl interaction with HTML problem. Here is the line:
print "<FORM ACTION="swap.pl" TYPE=POST>";
I've tried all sorts of various exchanges between single quotes and
double quotes.
Some other trials.
print '<FORM ACTION="swap.pl" TYPE=POST>';
print '<FORM ACTION=\"swap.pl\" TYPE=POST>;'
print "<FORM ACTION='swap.pl' TYPE=POST>";
Not all of these compiled w/out errors, but they are examples of the
toggling that just does not seem to work. I don't know what combination
is left that I have not tried.
I am completely stumped. If someone could help me out I would very much
appreciate it. If you need to see the whole script then I would be happy
to
e-mail it to you to have a peek at. My e-mail:
mnations@airmail.net

Marc

print "</FORM>";
This is not necessary in normal HTML.
As a result I'm not sure whether my problem with the action line is
simply a
path problem or a perl interaction with HTML problem. Here is the line:
print "<FORM ACTION="swap.pl" TYPE=POST>";
I've tried all sorts of various exchanges between single quotes and
double quotes.
Some other trials.
print '<FORM ACTION="swap.pl" TYPE=POST>';
print '<FORM ACTION=\"swap.pl\" TYPE=POST>;'
print "<FORM ACTION='swap.pl' TYPE=POST>";
My e-mail:

Subject: PERL/HTML Interaction problems with <ACTION... command
Message-Id: <37E2A625.1B9B04C1@americasm01.nt.com>
Everything works pretty good up until the point I have to submit the
info.
When you press the button, the selection screen refreshes and a "?"
appears
by the address of the page:
ex: ...server/temp/trans.pl --> ...server/temp/trans.pl?
^^
I've tried dozens of options trying to get this to run, but the
interaction
of PERL and HTML seems random sometimes.
ex: In order for the submit button to work I had to enclose it with
the
<FORM></FORM> set. print "<FORM>";
print "<INPUT...";
print "</FORM>";
This is not necessary in normal HTML.
As a result I'm not sure whether my problem with the action line is
simply a
path problem or a perl interaction with HTML problem. Here is the line:
print "<FORM ACTION="swap.pl" TYPE=POST>";

Hmmm... Shouldn't ActiveState have made these adjustments themself?
Anyway, I did this and MakeMaker now seems to work fine in the respect
that it doesn't output any error-messages and the makefile is written,
but the problem remains. When I try to run make I get the following
error-message (same as before):
[Borland C++ 5.02]:
MAKE Version 5.0 Copyright (c) 1987, 1997 Borland International
Error makefile 128: Colon expected
Fatal makefile 742: No terminator specified for in-line file operator
[MS Visual C++ 5.0]:
Microsoft (R) Program Maintenance Utility Version 1.62.7022
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corp 1988-1997. All rights reserved.
makefile(411) : fatal error U1000: syntax error : ')' missing in macro
invocatio
n
Stop.
Unfortunately I don't know how to work with makefiles so I have no idea
what's wrong with the file. It is also a bit strange that Borland C and
MSVC finds different errors (although it might be due to differences in
the way they parse the code). I suppose I could post the makefile, but
it's quite big and I don't think that's where the problem lies.
Makemaker should produce correct code, should it not? Could it be that
the produced makefile contains UNIX-specific code as well?
Best regards,
/Andreas

I usually pronounce it the same way I pronounce a space or a hyphen.

Aitch tee-tee pee rE f'r Er, where E is schwa.
> Is "HTTP_REFERRER" a single word?
No. It's an acronym and a word. That's why there's an _ between
them. HTTP_REFERER, the environment variable that is usually defined
in a CGI context, is an acronym and a misspelled word.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to

sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
