No, Jonathan is right. As usual. The programming language
is irrelevant to the problem. But bear these other tidbits
in mind:
[1] HTTP_REFERER is non-portable, and some webservers don't
let you at it.
[2] It is easily spoofable. I would expect that anyone
visiting the site mentioned below would go out of their
way to hide their address.
[3] As you found out, some browsers mess up when it comes
to HTTP standards.
So your best bet is to find an alternative approach.
Your second-best is to go to a browsers newsgroup and ask
there.

If the post office delivers a correctly addressed envelope containing a
letter with spelling errors or a letter that is misread by someone with
poor eyesight, is the post office to blame? Just because Perl took part
in the delivery of the HTML to the browser does not mean Perl had
anything to do with the quality of the HTML or the response of the
browser to that HTML.
Here are the three possibilities of your problem:
1) The Perl script can't find the value of the referer.
2) Perl can find it, but the HTML used to display it is not correct.
3) Perl can find it and the HTML is correct, but the browser can't
display it.
Since you told us that the script can pass the value of the referrer to
IE, explanation #1 is out. That leaves explanations #2 (an HTML issue,
not a Perl issue) and #3 (a browser issue, not a Perl issue).
Jonathan's advice was good: check in a newsgroup that deals with HTML
and browsers so you can determine which of those two remaining
explanations is the culprit.

Yes ... this is the problem. I'll need ports for both Unix and Win NT. Most
of the CPAN modules I have seen so far rely on native code calls. As Perl is
the greatest language on the face of the planet, I never learned how to deal
with C or C++ or Win nmake (I don't even own a C/C++ compiler for Win) ...
you can do everything in Perl. I did see a Web page out of the UK called
something like "crypt - o - sig" which had a pure Perl five line encryption
script (the 3 line relied on a unix module, I believe), but that seems to
have disappeared. Any suggestions? (short of learning C/C++)
Thanks

Since you have libwww, you can just read the examples in

How would I get what command prompt the perl script is running on? I
need to differentiate between the standard command.com prompt, and
bash.exe for windows, because bash seems to issue it's own . when
<STDIN> when it is asked for the first time, and therefore, whenever
any script is run on windows using bash, the first <STDIN> gets
'bypassed' (bash seems to supply a "." there itself).

This should do it in most circumstances: my $shell = $ENV{SHELL} ||
$ENV{COMSPEC};

This program claims that "Februar" has 31 days, and "Dezember" has 30. The
rest seem to be right, though.
OTOH, if I use numerical months, it's pure nonsense.

you're probably running the code thusly
C:\>someprogram.pl > somefile.txt
where you need to remember that the .pl is NOT a command .. it's just a
file that you've mapped the extension of .. therefore NT never gets to
see the '>' because it's actually passed to your Perl program as a
command line argument .. try
C:\>perl someprogram.pl > somefile.txt

Hi,
How can I pass a subroutine to the sort function by reference? I would
like to have a sorting function that gets passed the sorting subroutine
to use as an argument, something like:
sub sortList (\@\&) {
my ($list, $func) = @_;

where the subs would be something like:
sub numericSort {
$a <=> $b;
}
sub numericSortReverse {

}

I haven't been able to nail down the syntax if there is any.

I figured out how to do this. However, now I have the problem that the
variables $a and $b in the functions aren't the same as those the
namespace of the module that will eventually use the function to do the
sort. Any way to get around that?

Perl will not need chunks larger than 8K unless the user code requires

Original post to comp.infosystems.www.authoring.cgi follows
Hi all,
I am having a problem with using enctype=multipart/form-data in my forms.
I have a simple HTML file that calls a simple perl file, which prints out a
few lines of text (eventually it will do more than that, which is why I need
CGI).
If I do not have the 'enctype' parameter in the form tag of the HTML file,
everything works OK. However, if I wish to upload files, I realise that I
will require the 'enctype' parameter.
My problem occurs when the 'enctype' parameter is in the form tag. The perl
file only gets as far as printing the "Hello?" out and then nothing happens.
Does anyone know why this is happening, or what I am doing wrong? I am
running Suse Linux 5.3, the Apache server that comes with it and Perl
5.004_04
Cheers,
Ben

My first recommendation is to switch to Perl 5 [the current
stable version is 5.005_03] and the module Net::FTP .
If your problem continues after that, then please come back
with: [1] code, and [2] OS information for the local and
remote machines.

Thank you very much! You are a great person.

You don't even need all that work. Try:
ppm install DBI DBD-ODBC
and then hit 'y' a couple times, as above.
BTW, did you really need to include all that trayf at the
bottom of your message? Or to post using MIME? Usenet
is a text-only medium, so address cards and non-text junk
are really unpleasant for many newsreaders.

No, it won't. It will print " 4.6".

Good advice in any case. But see `perldoc -f sprintf` for what the
various fields in the format mean.

Administrivia:
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq" from
almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu. The real FAQ, as it appeared last in the
newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send perl-users FAQ" from
almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor
the FAQ are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq" from
almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
