I'd rather not. :-)

But if you have stuff due tomorrow, you probably should have started
working on it earlier, don't you think? Don't let anyone say that college
doesn't teach skills you'll need in the real world; you're learning time
management.

Of course, the (perceived) urgency of your situation has nothing to do
with Perl or this newsgroup; you won't get your answers any faster (or
slower) by bragging about when stuff is due. Well, except for the delay
while I compose paragraphs like this one. :-)

Have you looked for it in the perldiag manpage?

Whether it was you or not, somebody messed up the installation. Make sure
that 'make test' works before doing 'make install'. Good luck with it!

Yup. You messed up. The module wasn't installed properly.

No, I don't think (much, that is).

Not at all. It has to do with basic syntax. You cannot dump a BLOCK
arbitrarily in the middle of an expression.

   config = substr($ENV{'HTTP_COOKIE'},7) or do {
                                     print "Set-Cookie: config=1\n";

Message-Id: <37667380.0@nnrp1.news.uk.psi.net>

Hi, I'm trying to trim a string that contains both alphabetic and numeric
chars. For example, "Call Detail For 012542916".

I want to remove all of the alphabetic (i.e. [a-zA-Z]) characters, so that
I'm just left with the numberic string ("012542916").

I've tried various functions - string matching, substitution and
translation. I think I'll use the substr function, as below:

substr($wholestring, n);

where $wholestring = the complete string and n = the length of the
alphabetical part of the string.

So, I just need to know how to find the length of the alphabetical part of
the string.

Phew, that was long-winded!

Thanks,

Simon

Fortunately, adding 0.5 repeatedly introduces no floating-point

Do you mean that you want to redirect a remote browser to view a different
URL? If so, check the docs, FAQs, and newsgroups about browsers and their
protocols.

Do you mean that you want to fetch an HTML file over the net? If soo, see
the answer in section 9 of the FAQ.

Cheers!

If you're following the proper protocol but some browser or server doesn't
cooperate, then it's the other program's fault. If you're not following
the protocol, then it's your fault. If you aren't sure about the protocol,
you should read the protocol specification. If you've read it and you're
still not sure, you should ask in a newsgroup about the protocol.

Hope this helps!

The boring way...

#!/usr/bin/perl -w

while (length $dna > 3) {
	print substr($dna,0,3), '+';

As of 5.005, substr() now also accepts 4 parameters, the fourth being a
replacement string.

	while(length $dna > 3) {
		print substr($dna,0,3,""), '+';
	}
	print $dna;

Actually, what you posted produces this:

  Tue Jun 15 ,1999

You are too fixated on '\w' (and the '+' in your regex is meaningless in
any case).

my $date = localtime;
$date =~ s/ \d\d:\d\d:\d\d/,/;

I wouldn't even bother with a regex.

substr($date, 10, 9) = ',';

Well, it's arguably wrong to blindly conflate the user-request

You're looking for the special variable $( . Put a backslash in front of
it.

>it's supposed to look for $vars in html code and replace them with the

Although absolutely dispicable, this seems to work:

	$name = "Bart";
	$HTML = "Hello to you, \$name!\n";
	$HTML =~ s/\$(\w+)/${$main::{$1}}/g;
	print $HTML;

But you REALLY shopuldn't be doing this. Reason: your custom variables
are trampling all over your program variables. Use a hash containing
just those custom "variables". It should even be just as fast (since
variables are accessed through some kind of hash, too).

	%value = ( name => "Bart");
	$HTML = "Hello to you, \$name!\n";
	$HTML =~ s/\$(\w+)/$value{$1}/g;
	print $HTML;

	Bart.

Depends upon how it's implemented. So you should probably check out the

What happened when you tried it? :-)

You should be aware that many database files (on Unix systems, at least)
may have "holes" which take up no real disk space.

Yes - especially if it was saved as a .WRI file ;-{ If the script is
to be run on a UNix system then you will need to transfer the file
from the PC in ASCII mode (assuming FTP) - if you are sharing the files
between a PC and unix then you will need to strip the \015s from the
line with some program.

Administrivia:

Well, after 6 months, here's the answer to the quiz: what do we do about
comp.lang.perl.moderated. Answer: nothing.

]From: Russ Allbery <rra@stanford.edu>
]Date: 21 Sep 1998 19:53:43 -0700
]Subject: comp.lang.perl.moderated available via e-mail
]
]It is possible to subscribe to comp.lang.perl.moderated as a mailing list.
]To do so, send mail to majordomo@eyrie.org with "subscribe clpm" in the
]body. Majordomo will then send you instructions on how to confirm your
]subscription. This is provided as a general service for those people who
]cannot receive the newsgroup for whatever reason or who just prefer to
]receive messages via e-mail.

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.

The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
