the perldoc Thread

If I wish to synchronize the access to
a variable, how should I do?
the document only mentioned about "lock" function,
but how about "unlock"? Is there an unlock function?

besides, can I find any sample for the perl

I cant believe that we have got to this stage in the game and
people are still asking this question - what precisely is it that
prevents from going to <http://www.deja.com> and searching for 'Y2K'

Message-Id: <7jfdoo$lv4$1@holly.prod.itd.earthlink.net>

I'm dying to find a script that can handle my needs.

I have a database of local restaurants. I want a amazon.com-like
system to be able to search, rate, and review them. I want people
who come to my web site to be able to rate and/or review the
restaurants. I also want to allow readers to search based on name,
address, cuisine, rating (i.e. rated 3 stars or above).

The more customizable the better.

I'd be willing to sacrifice some functionality to save some $$$, but
am willing to pay to get what I want...

No problem - a lot of the machines here have both. Of course you will
want to have the executables called different things or you will get

Is it possible to use SSI in html documents generated using

Oooooooooooooooh... I see....

Why books never talk about this?

Since you feel generous, let me abuse and ask:

* the name of the submit button on the 2nd page is the same as on
  the first one (i.e. 'abutton'). That's ok, right? It seems to me
  that that IS the way to do it.

* I moved the moveon() to main, but it goes through it without
  waiting for the user to click either button on the second page.
  In other words, page displays fine, but it won't wait for the user
  to press the buttons on the 2nd page (so it can go to a third page,
  depending which button (i.e Change or Send) was cliked on).
  Why???!!!!

##main

if (param())
   reflectdata; # new buttons are here...
   moveon(); # when asked to print value of submit still show old
                  value.
else
   crateform();

Real code:
=========

 ...
$submit = param('abutton');

 ...

sub createform {
	...
	 td( submit(-NAME=>'abutton', -VALUE=>'Sign Guestbook')),
	  ## click here and reflectdata() is invoked
	...
}
 ...
sub reflectdata {
         print p("name: $name");
         print p("email: $email");
         print p("comments: $comments");
         print start_form();
         print table({-BORDER=>'1'},
         Tr(td({-COLSPAN=>2,-ALIGN=>'center'})),

Tr(td({-ALIGN=>'right'},submit(-NAME=>'abutton',-VALUE=>'Send')),

td({-ALIGN=>'left'},submit(-NAME=>'abutton',VALUE=>'Change')),
        )),
         end_form();
}

 ...

sub moveon {
       if ($submit eq "Send") {
         print p("sending to book...");
         sendtobook();
    } elsif ($submit eq "Change") {
         print p("changing...");
         changebook();
    } else { print "submit is $submit";} old value (gets printed
}

 ...

if (param()) {
   reflectdata();
   moveon(); ##### where should this go then? :-(
} else {
   createform(); # creates form, submit leads to reflectdata()

Either way, this is the last time I bug you with this project.
Thank you for your help.

Right ! And, even if it's not a perl question, let me tell you that typing
"help" in a dos shell will help you. Note that Microsoft was a bit more
logic that it's now : you had to type "help" to get help, and not to click
"start" to stop your computer... Anyway, I don't remember which command you
need to look help on, but I know there's something about the escape codes
you need in the help on a command which deals with video modes or something
like that.

Good search !

Try:

@current_time = locatltime(time);

The array then holds a lot of info all broken up. I can't remember
which parts are which at the moment, but I can basically remember that
$current_time[3] is the day of the month, $current_time[4] is the month
of the year (0-11) and $current[5] is a 2 digit year. I think elements
0 and 1 are the hour and minutes.

Just print out the whole array and figure out which bits are which.

that should be $current_time[5] and it is not a 2 digit year. you have
just propogated a y2k bug. the year value is an offset from 1900 which
you would have know had you consulted the documentation.

why do you post answers which are not correct? why are you guessing what
the values are?

  ot> Just print out the whole array and figure out which bits are which.

why don't you rtfm instead of suggesting an empirical analysis which
will undoubtedly be wrong?

and of course, this is an FAQ which is answered in perl's fine FAQ.

Yep. it's a basic sort function on the results of a search.
I run www.homecinemachoice.com in which there is a large and growing
archive of home theatre hardware reviews. I want to be able to search and
sort on any of the visible fields on the flat file database.
The field to sort on will be passed in the $sort_on variable.

>
>Seems a bit 'heavy' if you don't know much about Perl (or even if you do,

(I don't - I have to do perl programming about twice a year. I avoid it
wherever possible ! After 10 years programming professionally for business
apps, 90% of the perl I use is gobbledygook to me, and I do it the hard way
with wordpad and uploading to a remote web server for testing. If a script
doesn't work, I comment out all the lines and uncomment each line,upload
and test 'till I find the bug. It's usually an omitted semi-colon or
squiggly bracket.  Rediculous.
I *have* tried to get a local webserver working, but never succeeded.)

Will do - many thanks for your help. So I set $sort to be the number of
the column I want to sort on ?
My database is
001|Philips|56DBV|3.|0|499|199902|http://www.homecinemachoice.com/tried&tested/Televisions/Philips/Philips56DBV.shtml
where the columns are :
key (not used for anything other than reference), manufacturer, model,
rating (in stars '.' indicates half a star), best buy 1 or 0, price, review
date and review url.
I will want to sort on one from manufacturer, model, rating, price and
date.

Many thanks again.

Now:
How do I get my first script to start the others and give

I know how to do this via Browser:
http:......fireball.pl?URL=testurl&QUE=querystring&FIN=50

but whenever I try to get this started by the script, it
won't work:

"Fireball:can't fork; $!";

This isn't really a perl issue, but I have done this. Add file:/// (at
least on win95) and you can view the file locally. I write it to a div
using javascript, but you could use a frame or write a new window with
the image in it.

Bastiaan,

Well, if the system administrator don't want to make is job, just do it for
him. You don't have right to install modules ? It's no problem ! MIME::Lite
is not a big module with many files and so on... Just download it,
decompress it in your own directory (the one you run your scripts in) and
call it ! I swear it'll work, and that it'll be easier.

Regards,

Fred

Make your script much more robust... because your current script would really
choke if the submission came from a mac... and your proposed solution would
double space each line if submitted from a win/dos platform machine.

$text =~ s/\r\n|\r|\n/<BR>\n/g;

No. One goes to <http://reference.perl.com/query.cgi?editors> and makes

Message-Id: <375B56CF.3C4E8AAD@umr.edu>

I'm writing this Perl appliation that takes input from the 10-Key keypad
part of the keyboard. Since the script expects to get numbers as input
when the keys are pressed, i have to manually turn on NumLock before i
use the application. I was wondering if anyone knew of a Perl module or
something that would let me turn on NumLock with a function call. Any
help is appreciated... Please reply via e-mail.

Read the config files of your server. And ask somewhere else, as your
question has absolutely nothing to do with Perl. I suggest chile.comics.

Don't you think calling yourself 'webb meister' is a little premature?

I have access to a server that allows full cgi scripting, including
permissions.

The server allows access to a GUNZIP program. The program is located at:
/usr/contrib/bin/gunzip

I want to write a short perl script to allow me to unzip files on the
server. I cannot do it in my client workstation because it is a WebTV.

I am able to FTP zip files from their places on the Web to my server.

WHAT is the perl statement that allows me to unzip? Exactly HOW do I
include the /usr/contrib/bin/gunzip file in my program?

Message-Id: <7jfsaq$gjm$1@gatekeeper.ornano.kapt.com>

Well, I had some problems with multi-part too, and I would change you're
code to be :

use MIME::Lite;

$msg = new MIME::Lite (
        From    =>'x@x.xxx',
        To      =>'x@x.xxx',
        Subject =>'A message with 2 parts...',
        Type    =>'TEXT',
        Data    =>"Hello\n",);

attach $msg (
       Disposition=>'attachment', # I've also tried leaving this field out
       Type     =>'application/octet-stream',
       Path     =>'file.pl',
       Filename =>'attach');

$msg->send;

Just forget the multipart, send your text mail, and attach your file... I
don't say, it's the only solution. It's a one which works. For the theory,
it's different. In a practical way, it's the same...

Fred

Well, after 6 months, here's the answer to the quiz: what do we do about
comp.lang.perl.moderated. Answer: nothing.

]From: Russ Allbery <rra@stanford.edu>
]Date: 21 Sep 1998 19:53:43 -0700
]Subject: comp.lang.perl.moderated available via e-mail
]
]It is possible to subscribe to comp.lang.perl.moderated as a mailing list.
]To do so, send mail to majordomo@eyrie.org with "subscribe clpm" in the
]body. Majordomo will then send you instructions on how to confirm your
]subscription. This is provided as a general service for those people who
]cannot receive the newsgroup for whatever reason or who just prefer to
]receive messages via e-mail.

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.

The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
