I'm not sure why DSN's don't seem to work with SQL server. Try this instead:
Replace #1,#2,#3, and #4 with info specific to your setup. For example, #1
= the path to your SQL server. #1 is NOT a DSN.

$providerStr = "Provider=SQLOLEDB; Data Source=#1; User Id=#2; Password=#3;
Initial Catalog=#4;";
$conn->Open("$providerStr");

Hi,
In my Perl 5 program, I have several print statements to print
text to screen. My program parses through a lot of text data and so its
possible that the user might feel that the program has crashed as there is
no output to the screen during this time. I propose to output periods
(".") to the screen, while the program is calculating once every 'x' times
the program loops. Periods are printed only if there is a newline
character "\n". I want all the periods to be printed in the same line. Hos
is this done?

I want to begin to learn perl as well, but just found what you wrote way
over my head.
Anyone know of a nice place to start learning perl.
I eventually want to apply it to use with simple databases and generating
pre-designed html templates with the data for my movie release dates in
Australia, United States.
Cause I plan to expand the release dates to Hong Kong, Canada, UK,
Singapore, Malaysia, New Zealand and other places like Sweden. But
maintaining such a big list of release dates from Jan - Dec 1999 is too
much work without databases, perl or something.
Any help or suggestions?

The approach you describe would probably work...assuming that your 'Web
Server' supports CGI and is configured correctly.
It also depends on what the 'value' is that your script outputs. In the
example you give, it should be an image (not to be confused with the _name_
of an image).
best of luck!

I think maybe most of us don't, at least not these days.

It really is easy: "use" statements are evaluated at compile-time, while
the assignment is executed at run-time. To force the assignment to take
place at compile-time, execute it in a BEGIN block:
BEGIN {
my ($prog_dir) = $0 =~ m|^(.*/)?[^/]+$|;
use lib "$prog_dir";
}
use MyLib1;
use MyLib2;
IMHO, a better solution than the above regexp is the module FindBin,
which is part of the standard perl distribution (and which is mentioned
in lib.pod):
use FindBin;
use lib $FindBin::Bin;
use MyLib1;
use MyLib2;

Subject: Using Templates for CGIs in Perl and other Languages
Message-Id: <7bqllt$ai6$1@nnrp1.dejanews.com>
Hello CGI developers,
Introduced is the ATP Template Toolkit, the best template tool/library for web
application development, because it
1. supports virtually all the web platforms and languages,
2. provides the ultimate flexibility in rendering dynamic content,
3. defines a simple, intuitive template syntax and a series of nifty features
that are designed for web application development,
4. uses exactly the same template syntax for various programming languages,
5. uses a consistent programming model that is easy to learn and optimal for
performance,
6. has extensive documentation, tutorial with on-line demos, and
7. last but not least -- it works!
For Perl CGI applications, it has an ATP Perl Preprocessor that turns the
template into a Perl script. The Perl code necessary to handle the dynamic
content is written at the end of template following a special tag.
For C/C++ CGI applications, it has an C/C++ Preprocessor. This preprocessor
can take multiple templates and generate multiple source code files to be
used in a project.
Both tools are pure Java non-GUI applications, they run on any development
platforms.

I've written quite a few Perl programs and run them from a DOS window.
But, other then resorting to VC++ for a front-end interface, what else can
I use.
Right now I would be happy to do a Curses app from a DOS Window, but
eventually I would like to be able to plot data in a 3D graphical format
along with text.
I have much more experience running code in UNIX environment, but obviously
Win95 is quite different.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

Sounds like you ought to check out the Tk toolkit, which has been ported
to Perl. You can used it to create nice GUI interfaces that work
cross-platform. If you're using ActiveState's port of perl, you can get
Tk binaries for it from ActiveState's site. There's also a newsgroup:
comp.lang.perl.tk. Nancy Walsh has written an O'Reilly book on Perl/Tk;
go to <URL:http::/perl.ora.com> for more details.

One of the nice things about Tk and similar windowing toolkits is that
they hide most of the differences from you.

Many. Anywhere where daylight savings kicks forward an hour
will have a 23 hour day on that day. So from midnight to 1am
the *next* day, subtracting 24*60*60 seconds will put you *two*
days back on the calendar.
This is easy to see by counting 1 hour intervals:
day 1: 23:00 - 0
day 2: 01:00 - 1
day 2: 02:00 - 2
day 2: 03:00 - 3
day 2: 04:00 - 4
day 2: 05:00 - 5
day 2: 06:00 - 6
day 2: 07:00 - 7
day 2: 08:00 - 8
day 2: 09:00 - 9
day 2: 10:00 - 10
day 2: 11:00 - 11

day 3: 00:00 - 24
Twenty four hours before 00:00 on day 3 is 23:00 on
calendar day 1.
The opposite effect happens when going off daylight savings
- 24 hours before 23:00 to 00:00 on that day is 00:00 to
01:00 the *same* day because the day is 25 hours long.
This will happen in any country that observes daylight savings.

Well, after 6 months, here's the answer to the quiz: what do we do about
comp.lang.perl.moderated. Answer: nothing.

]
]It is possible to subscribe to comp.lang.perl.moderated as a mailing list.
]To do so, send mail to majordomo@eyrie.org with "subscribe clpm" in the
]body. Majordomo will then send you instructions on how to confirm your
]subscription. This is provided as a general service for those people who
]cannot receive the newsgroup for whatever reason or who just prefer to
]receive messages via e-mail.
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
