These are considered harmless, though in some circumstances can make
startup a tiny bit slower (loading and resolving unneeded shared
libraries).

R> Configure went through to the end. But when I tried to make, make gave

You will have to see what is wrong around line 403 in
.../lib/Config.pm, since it is a constructed file, and will vary
between builds.

R> Where do I begin to solve this compilation issue? I didn't install the

You don't provide many details...

Make sure that the "Development Foundation" and "Development
Libraries" CDs are installed. A bare minimum is probably installed
to get as far as you have, but it may not be enough. More details
about the config.sh generated by Perl's Configure and the error
messages might be needed.

Also, which sub-release of IRIX is installed? `uname -aR`.

IRIX IRIS 6.5 6.5.2f 11051211 IP22

S> You will have to see what is wrong around line 403 in
S> ../lib/Config.pm, since it is a constructed file, and will vary

Actually, now that I look for it, I can't find a Config.pm anywhere except one
in a previous perl (500404) directory

S> Make sure that the "Development Foundation" and "Development
S> Libraries" CDs are installed. A bare minimum is probably installed
S> to get as far as you have, but it may not be enough.

How do I make sure that these CDs are installed. Is there a way to check, for
instance, via versions command? (I can ask person who installed, but he's gone
for the day.)

S> More details

Here's the content of my config.sh

Subject: Re: gcc, perl, and IRIX 6.5
Message-Id: <36DF27E1.1AC7E61F@ldr.com>

By the way, I noticed on the freeware.sgi.com site, on the page about
gcc-2.8.1: description and notes, that gcc-2.8.1 "requires the SGI back-end
(assembler and linker) since the GNU back-end (binutils) doesn't yet support
the new SGI ABIs."

Could this be the problem? Do the config.sh (see previous email) and Makefile
(herebelow) help to determine that?

Thanks for any help you can give.

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.

The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
