As Joshua said, line 23 in admin5.cgi is irrelevant. This error message
clearly reports that the error is happening in an eval, not in your main
script. Considering your code, I would say it is very likely that this
eval is somewhere in the CGI module.
> {\$Query->popup_menu(-name=>'location',

Did you read CGI.pm's documentation on the popup_menu function?
4. The optional fourth parameter (-labels) is provided for people who
want to use different values for the user-visible label inside the
popup menu nd the value returned to your script. It's a pointer to
an associative array relating menu values to user-visible labels.
If you leave this parameter blank, the menu values will be
displayed by default. (You can also leave a label undefined if you
want to).
This says that the fourth paremeter (-labels) should be a pointer
(reference) to an *associative array (hash)*. You are passing it a
reference to a regular array. Hence the error message.

You can sort a hash by its keys. There is an example on page 100 of=20
"Programming Perl" and likely somewhere in the perldocs. But if you=20
do that more than once, you might want to make a list of the keys,=20
sort that and use that as a reference in a foreach loop to access each=20
hash value.
In your example, it is easy to sort each unique alias as key and user=20
as value, but if you want to have the user as a key, you would need a=20
hash of lists where the key is the user and the value is a list of=20
aliases.

How create cookies for referral tracking?
Do you have experience or know someone who has experience installing cookies
for referral tracking purposes?
I've been using cookies with great success and now the cookies refuse to work
properly on one domain I've tried installing to :(
So far I've only tested the cookie solutions found at
http://www.virtualpromote.com:
VirtualPROMOTE Gazette - Issue #49 (xssi cookies)
VirtualPROMOTE Gazette - Issue #53 (asp cookies)
VirtualPROMOTE Gazette - Issue #46 (ssi cookies)
VirtualPROMOTE Gazette - Issue #45 (cookies placed within the html page)
...and still no success.
The wierd things that happen are 1) the cookies are placed on my browser when
I visit but not retrieved when the order form is submitted. 2) The cookie
"remembers" the last person who visited the site before me and sends their
data to the browser as the referrer instead of the current referer.
I know this is supposed to be impossible since cookies are client-side apps,
but that's what seems to be happening. :( If you were to place an order it
would say you were referred by whichever referre was used before you visited
and the referrer you should give credit to would go to whoever visits after
you. This is a real mess!
If you know of a great resource for creating cookies or fixing existing
cookies please contact me, I may be too close to the forest to see the trees.
Thanks!

All the solutions so far only tell you how to get lowercase or
uppercase, not how to change the case. So...
tr/a-zA-Z/A-Za-z/;
I don't know that this will respect locale, though, whereas lc() et al.
will.

Message-Id: <36B82E40.628F8AFC@webleicester.co.uk>
Okay, I'm being lazy.. Basically, I need to convert my search engine
from doing OR matches, to AND matches..
At the minute, when a user enters a search string, the spaces are
replaced with vertical bars, for or'ing.. so when it pattern matches, it
finds entries that contain 1 or more words in the string..
I want to change it to AND, but why can i do this
=~ /firstword|secondword|thirdword/
but not this ?
=~ /firstword&secondword&thirdword/
I could easily code it so that I just match each word seperately, its
just far nicer/easier if I could just pattern match it in one go, like
I do currently with or's !
Anyone got any ideas ?
Using .* isnt satisfactory, because then surely the words have to be in
the same order...
=~ /firstword.*secondword.*thirdword/ <=== this may be incorrect of my
meaning, but .. u know what I mean ;)
In that case, the actual entry would have to be:
firstword ....... secondword ... thirdword
and
secondword..firstword..
wouldnt match.. but they need too !
Mark.

Is it woth doing? That depends on why you are doing it.
If the answer is for speed, I would suggest using a different driver than the
generic ODBC, Postgres is the one I think mates up to an SQL server. This is
much faster than the generic ODBC.
Is the program that is calling this written in perl? If not what? If C you
could really just embed this perl code in the C code quite easily. This is
pretty well documented in quite a few Oreilly books. If it is something else,
I have done the lowly way of running command line executeables from within my
perl programs when I was lazy (using qx and then a command line). This is
usually a quick hack for the proof of concept.
Just my .02
email me if you would like, I have done quite a bit of work with perl and
databases.

Ala is not familiar with CGI.pm's handling of file upload fields.
CGI.pm's documentation states "The filename returned is also a file
handle." In other words, the first argument you are using in read()
*is* a filehandle, which is why your code works fine.
Note that until 5 minutes ago, I was not familiar with CGI.pm's handling
of file upload fields either. I found Ala's argument convincing until I
searched the CGI.pm documentation for 'upload'. :-)

Based on CGI.pm's documentation on handling file upload fields, I
believe this is almost the right way to do it.
What you really want, however, is to just turn off strict refs in a
block:
{
no strict 'refs';
while (read($file,$buffer,8192)) {
print UPLOAD $buffer;
}
}
Then, when the block is over, strict automatically goes back to whatever
it was before.

It's freeware. Never used it. Never knew it existed till I read the above

]It is possible to subscribe to comp.lang.perl.moderated as a mailing list.
]To do so, send mail to majordomo@eyrie.org with "subscribe clpm" in the
]body. Majordomo will then send you instructions on how to confirm your
]subscription. This is provided as a general service for those people who
]cannot receive the newsgroup for whatever reason or who just prefer to
]receive messages via e-mail.
The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:
subscribe perl-users
or:
unsubscribe perl-users
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.
To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
