I created a script on NT p5 iis4.

It seems to work fine but I get this error every 6 to 8 uploads.

Even if the file is the same or different.

I used CGI.pm in my script.

Any ideas?

Well, I was going to post something sarcastic, but I'll refrain.
Go to a search engine and look for "cookie FAQ". This isn't a Perl
question. You can use many languages to write/use cookies.

I agree. I even bought the book and that didn't really help me (maybe I'm a
bit thick).

I just can't figure out why I keep getting "malformed multipart posts"
errors.

But then again, I'm following the Docs and using OOP format.

Maybe after I get a copy of Toms revised Docs on CGI.pm, I will get a better
handle on this and solve my problem.

But then again, there is always cgi-lib.pl

Can someone please post some code that may help me.

I need to check for a files existence, if it exists I print a error message,
if it doesn't exist I call a routine. I tried to do this various ways and
no matter what I can't get it to work.
let the file be "file.bak" and the routine to be called "routine"
I'd appreciate someone posting code that could help me do this.

Thanks in advance!

Here's something:

    $thefile = '/path/to/file.bak';

    # does the file exist?
    if (-e $thefile) {

	# yes - that's an error
	print STDERR "Darnit! The file $thefile exists!\n";

    } else {

	# no - call my special routine
	routine();

    }

I tend to think that your script will probably do something like
error out if the file exists and continue normally if it doesn't.
In that case, you might want to write it more like this:

    $thefile = '/path/to/file.bak';

    # bail out if the file exists
    if (-e $thefile) {

	die "Error: File $thefile already exists\n";

    }

    # safe to run my routine
    routine();

    (more code follows)

I could use some examples that work.

My version that uses CGI.pm gives me "malformed multipart posts" every 6 to
8 submits and I have no idea why.

Hello,
I start learning Perl last week. I buy three books on this topic. I hope
I can write some simple scripts in two to three months.
But I really don't know how to get start up to now ! The books assume
that your computer already have everything installed and ready to run
the scripts.
I have a question :
I use window 95. What software do I need to install in my computer so
that I can test and run the Perl scripts in my computer before I put the
scripts to the Server.
I already go to http://www.perl.com but I don't know which software
should I download.
Please help.
Thanks

Subject: install modules for perl in active perl
Message-Id: <Pine.GSO.4.03.9901012137220.8818-100000@virtue.csis.hku.hk>

I've installed ActiveState Perl in my PC running windows95. The
whole version of perl is installed in c:\perl

I want to install some modules as instructed in
	http://www.activeState.com/ActivePerl/docs/

It indicates that I can make use of the PPM when connected to the
internet through PPP.
I connected to the Internet and run C:\perl\bin\ppm.bat and the prompt
	PPM>
appears. As illustrated, I use the 'search' command to look at the
available modules but it did not return any available module.

Therefore, I suspect whether it is because of the proxy server.
and so with reference to the "PPM and Firewalls" page, i follow the
instructions.

In the first step, "Update your PPM", i have to download a download a
PPM package and installed the PPD file into a directory c:\package
The corresponding .tar.gz file is placed in the c:\package\x86.

I try to run the following command as instructed in step 1 in c:\perl\bin:
	perl ppm.pl install ppm --location=c:\package

but it said

"Error installing package 'ppm': Cannot forceunlink C:\Perl\bin\ppm.pl:
 Permission denied at C:\PERL\lib/File/Find.pm line 166"

After that, when i want to run the ppm.bat again, the following message
appear:
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.
Attribute VERSION=" missing an ending quote.

Therefore, the 1 step already seems to be failed and i can't continue with
my installation. I've also tried to set the environmental variable
HTTP_PROXY but it still fails.

Are the above steps the proper way to install the modules?

If I just download the package without PPM, am i really required
to use the "make" to compile? (It is inconvenient as I am in dos
environment)

What other ways can i try to achieve the same goal without using make or
PPM? Can i just download some executable files without those troublesome
steps to install the modules?

What are the proper steps for me to take in order that I can set up for my
proxy server in Perl?

Thank You for your help.

Don't waste your money. If you hadn't bought the other book, then sure,
I'd say you should get the Gecko, but there's enough online FAQ's and
Docs to show you the differences. If anything, you'll learn what doesn't
work on windows, instead of just what works does with windows.
Then again, if you have money to blow... then again, again, if you do,
get Programming Perl, Perl Cookbook, Advanced Perl Programming,
Mastering Regular Expressions, (all by O'reilly) and Effective Perl
Programming... That's to say, if you have money to blow.. If you don't,
then save up for those books.. because they are great.. There's more
too... :-)

Do you want CGI or news? CGI is HTTP, news is NNTP, and although the
acronyms look alike, they are very different. Many web clients will do
NNTP all by themselves.

This has nothing to do with Perl.. You simply have the script pointing
to, calling from, or printing HTML from a; perl script. This sounds more
like an HTML or web server problem. (after all, you say it works on
certain browsers and not others, check a browsers' NG too).
Good luck. :-)

The reason for this is Net::Domain::_hostname does not work under NT
(nor does it under VMS...). You can work around this using the option to
specify the hostname explicitely:

  $smtp = NET::SMTP->new( $mailHost, Hello=>$hostname );

In a CGI script, you can get it via

  $hostname = CGI::server_name;

Hope it helps,

I don't see where you have called either Data() or HashData() to retrieve
the data that was fetched by the call to FetchRow().

Take a look at this short tutorial if what I said doesn't make sense. It

   I prefer the latter as well.

   But as the Stones say, "You can't always get what you want".

   There is no artificial intelligence in the current implementation
   of clpmod, so I guess we _can_ get what we want in this case ;-)

   If a _person_ has to examine every single submission, we would
   need a panel of 30 moderators, or spend 20 hours a week
   reviewing articles. Many of the articles would be noise that
   are easily answered by Perl docs.

   Finding that level of commitment amongst volunteers would
   have been difficult to impossible.

   The registration email gives a lot of resources that can be
   used to answer Perl questions.

   I expect that many first-time posters find the answer by
   examining some of those resources, and withdraw their posting.

   Some stats on first-time submissions might be interesting, but
   I don't know that we have then information needed to make any
   meaningful conclusions about them.

      Registration emails that are never responded to.
      I don't think we can separate the two possibilities below:

         some because they found their answer in the docs

         some because they were "put off" by the act or registering

      First-time posts where the poster withdrew their post.

      First-time posts where the submitter registered and the
      first post was subsequently approved.

      First-time posts where the submitter registered and the
      first post was subsequently rejected.

And removed again since this has absolutely nothing to do with
programming perl and is thus completely off topic for the moderated
group. Notice how the moderators want to talk about it so it gets
approved anyway. Who needs a charter, huh?

Excuse me, Tad, but we were all told that a person DOES examine every
submission before it is approved. Of course, that's after someone takes
the trivial step of registering. Once someone is registered, there is
nothing at all to stop him from posting those awful FAQs that nobody
wants to see.

Do you have some statistics on how many people post once and never
register? Something like ten per week, one per week...

Numbers? I expect that many first-time posters avoid the moderated group
altogether since there is an unmoderated group.

We don't have to. If the claim is that registration is saving the
moderators from having to deal with a "boatload" of articles, then
simply counting up the unregistered postings will tell us that. The
only evidence we have that there is a boatload of these articles is your
conjecture, which isn't much evidence at all.

Well, after 6 months, here's the answer to the quiz: what do we do about
comp.lang.perl.moderated. Answer: nothing.

]It is possible to subscribe to comp.lang.perl.moderated as a mailing list.
]To do so, send mail to majordomo@eyrie.org with "subscribe clpm" in the
]body. Majordomo will then send you instructions on how to confirm your
]subscription. This is provided as a general service for those people who
]cannot receive the newsgroup for whatever reason or who just prefer to
]receive messages via e-mail.

The Perl-Users Digest is a retransmission of the USENET newsgroup
comp.lang.perl.misc. For subscription or unsubscription requests, send
the single line:

	subscribe perl-users
or:
	unsubscribe perl-users

to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.misc (and this Digest), send your
article to perl-users@ruby.oce.orst.edu.

To submit articles to comp.lang.perl.announce, send your article to
clpa@perl.com.

To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.

The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.

The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.

For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
