This isn't a perl problem. It's a linux problem.
You need to look into NLS and locales.
On my system, running Debian 2.0, the available locales are
under /usr/share/i18n/locales:
21:40:57 fredmill$ /bin/ls /usr/share/i18n/locales/
POSIX en_DK.com es_GT fi_FI hu_HU pt_BR
cs_CZ en_GB es_HN fo_FO is_IS pt_PT
da_DK en_IE es_MX fr_BE it_IT ro_RO
de_AT en_NZ es_PA fr_CA iw_IL ru_RU

en_CA es_DO es_VE gr_GR nl_NL

Sometimes, I set Spanish as my language of choice:
export LANG="es_MX"

export LANG="fr_FR"
You might want to put this in your profile.

Server (IIS3) will stop executing .pl files while still processing .asp's
and .html. Stopping web service and restarting it does not correct the
problem. Only a reboot solves this one. (Veerrrrryyy frustrating!). When
this issues shows it's ugly head, there are no runaway Perl.exe processes
showing in pviewer so I'm pretty much stumped. would a regression to an
older build (516?) be worthwhile to try, or even an upgrade to IIS4
(planned).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Maybe this:
# perldoc File::Find

BUGS
There is no way to make find or finddepth follow symlinks.
[snip]
Don't get me wrong: I am a fervent advocate of using modules,
especially when they have become part of the standard distribution.
But sometimes one needs a solution that works around a problem,
inadequacy or bug in the modules. That is when one rolls his/her own
code.
But indeed: the original poster probably does need File::Find, and not
the solution that you replied to (which has this bug as well, and more
serious ones).

You are chasing symlinks.
Bad.
You can get into a loop that way and run forever.

Um... no, probably, and yes. I'm sorry, I'm really trying to figure
out what you want here, and I'm completely failing.
First off, the sentence, "I've got a string that has multiple values I
would like to append to, from an array of values," doesn't make sense
to me. Did you leave out a word somewhere?
The code fragment makes sense. It'll replace all occurrences of the
string "subtag" with whatever's in slot $i of @array, but the comment
right after that doesn't make much sense. Where is $i getting set?
Are you expecting the s/// to somehow increment $i?
Try again. I'd really like to help if I can.

Subject: Single stepping through remote member functions (e.g. Tk::Entry::insert)
Message-Id: <6ve1ij$hl6$1@client2.news.psi.net>
Hi, I'm at a loss as to how to proceed.
Background:
I started to evaluate the ActiveState Perl system, after using Gurusamy
Sarathy's binary distribution Perl for some time.
I installed ActiveState and then loaded the Tk module. When I try to run a
script which has worked for some time I get the following error:
Goto undefined subroutine &Tk::Entry::insert
at d:\ap502\site\5.00502\lib/Tk/Widget.pm line 318.
When I couldn't figure out why, I tried to test out the script execution in
the G.S. Perl using the debugger (perl -d).
My code:
...
$entry->selection("range",0,"end");
$entry->delete(0, "end");
$entry->insert(0, $value);
...
Things work but I can't single step "s" into ANY of these functions! The
code just goes over them.
Any ideas on ... Why ActiveState gives the error? Why I can't single step
into these functions? How to proceed?
Thanks in advance for your attention.

Subject: SSL support for perl server?
Message-Id: <361a91e3$0$26078@nntp1.ba.best.com>
I've written a simple, single-threaded server using perl5, a number
of useful books, and a lot of trial and error. It's not a web server,
but instead used for some internal company work.
Currently, it just listens on a socket, sends data across, etc. I'd
like to allow some sort of encryption, and SSL sounds like a nice idea.
However, I don't know what I need to do to support it.
Specifically, has anyone written any kind of a server which accepts
both SSL and cleartext connections? (This would be necessary for a
while until all the clients can be updated...)
More importantly, how much work is it to implement? I just have a
select call right now looking at all the open sockets, and then deal
with each one in sequence when data is available. How difficult would
it be to add SSL support to this sort of server?
Many thanks to anyone who can give me some pointers. I've read the
SSLeay FAQ and the docs for Net::SSLeay, but I'm not familiar enough
with the SSL protocol to understand exactly what would be necessary
for me to get this to work.
My intention is not to provide financial-network-level security. The
application is not nearly that important. The primary goal is to
prevent casual packet sniffing to see the traffic. I've even considered
using simple obscurement (XOR or something similar), although I'd like
something a little stronger than that...

There was a patch on the LWP mailing list a while back to allow
HTTP::Daemon to handle "https". I don't think they ever got patched
into the core LWP though. That'd be sad.

Have a go at CPAN and check out Crypt::SSLeay and Net::SSL. One or both
of them should help you solve your problem.

This problem is driving me up the wall.
I'm trying to count the number of directory levels - simple enough.
$cnt = $foo =~ tr#/#/#;
This works just fine on regular unix. But to work on multiple OS's, I
want to
do something like this:
$cnt = $foo =~ tr#$SEP#$SEP#;;
But it's not producing the same results.
I look at the Camel book, and it states that tr accepts a char list, so
if $SEP eq '/',
it should work, right? Unless it's interpolating it in a way I'm not
familiar with.
Thanks in advance,
Allen
PS: I'm using 5.004 on Solaris.

clpa@perl.com.
To request back copies (available for a week or so), send your request
to almanac@ruby.oce.orst.edu with the command "send perl-users x.y",
where x is the volume number and y is the issue number.
The Meta-FAQ, an article containing information about the FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users meta-faq". The real FAQ, as it
appeared last in the newsgroup, can be retrieved with the request "send
perl-users FAQ". Due to their sizes, neither the Meta-FAQ nor the FAQ
are included in the digest.
The "mini-FAQ", which is an updated version of the Meta-FAQ, is
available by requesting "send perl-users mini-faq". It appears twice
weekly in the group, but is not distributed in the digest.
For other requests pertaining to the digest, send mail to
perl-users-request@ruby.oce.orst.edu. Do not waste your time or mine
sending perl questions to the -request address, I don't have time to
answer them even if I did know the answer.
