this fix has already been done for linux. if you download linux-afs
1.1.67 from afsdev, it fixes this problem, plus includes a recompiled
fs which will not resolve hostnames.
using this new config_afs + fs, it now takes me about 10 seconds to
start afs on my home machine over PPP.
