I noticed a "console" process burning CPU unniced, but I don't know
    what that is. Any thoughts?

One of the many many many bugs in the xlogin port. Somehow, extra
consoles get started up and burn huge amounts of CPU time.

If anybody really cares about having a working dm/xlogin/xconsole
suite, I'd recommend doing one of the following:

1) Take the athena xlogin sources, ignoring any work I did involving
them, and do a good job of porting them.

2) Take the standard xdm sources and add hesiod and kerberos and everything.

Have a nice day.
