when it adds you to the passwd file the encrypted password seems to be
about 24 characters long. Now at UCSC we don't like to add the
encrypted password at all, tho that's a lot more important in time-shared
machines (e.g. dialup servers) than it is in a personal workstation. But
I suspect the present behavior is not what is intended.
