Actually, I've been considering removing myself from linux-dev, since
I only got added to kick the 8.4 installer out the door.

Yup, looks pretty disgusting to me too, but I don't really care.

I don't like your patch. It implies that users must perform this step
manually, and I think it has a good chance of confusing users,
especially if they happen to leave their machine up overnight before
gettign to this step. Here is my counter-proposal, barring
objectiosn, I hope toinstall it tomorrow.
Then I'll think about taking myself off linux-dev again.
(The word 'up' is removed, mostly becuase that keeps the document from
overflowing onto a third page.)
