Subject: Error in loading X using SIPB installer
My computer, a Dell Latitude CPxJ 650 laptop with an ATI RAGE Mobility-M1
AGP2X 8mb video card, has been having some trouble with X in the athena
install (at least I believe.)
Every time I try installing Athena-Linux 6.2 in graphical mode, i get
through all the parts including language selection up to the telling it the
NFS server and the path to the red hat directory. After that, the screen
pauses, and I get a single black line at the bottom. Something like "mouse
detected" appears on that line and the next line says something like
"Starting /usr/x11r6/xf86_MACH64". Then, about 15 lines flash in front of
my eyes and the screen turns to a backlit black. In those 15 lines I also
see a couple "warning" messages but it is hard to make much of that out.
When i install it in text mode, i get up to the point where it says
something like "about to start x server", after all the file downloads, and
then right after that, the same freeze happens. If I let the freeze last
for about 5 minutes, the computer shuts down.
I had installed red-hat linux 7.1 on my computer from cd and everything
(including graphical install) worked fine (I just wanted, now though, to
have an athena terminal in my room.) I understand that there is a lot more
compatible hardware with 7.1 then 6.2, but I was wondering if one, you had
seen this problem before, and 2 if there is anything else I can try to do
to fix this freeze/or at least have the computer have the ability to be a
little crippled in 6.2 but be able to upgrade into 7.1.
Thanks
