At the very first screen, after you put the floppy in, type 'text'
instead of just hitting enter.
This should have it use the text mode installer throughout, and only
ask you about X configurations after the install has finished.
When you've installed that way, you can then login in text mode and
try to get X working. Try doing a web search including "linux" and the
exact model of your laptop, to see if anyone else has reported getting
X working on that model.
