Some of the things I found after installing the tar files in
/mit/linux/packages:

dash.tgz is missing the following files:

    /usr/athena/include/X11/bitmaps/{console.xbm,gray}
    /usr/athena/include/X11/bitmaps/{arrow,question,Dash.xbm}
    /usr/athena/lib/X11/app-defaults/{Console,Dash}

misc.tgz is missing /usr/athena/lib/X11/app-deafults/Mwm and
/usr/athena/lib/X11/system.mwmrc.

A note for the documentation: having an Athena account with a local
homedir works beautifully, as long as you remember to create the
homedir and put something in it. If xlogin sees an empty homedir, it
will assume it's a dangling mount point and remove it.

(If the above is unclear, I mean an /etc/passwd entry like
    ghudson:3622:...:/home/ghudson:/bin/tcsh
)

Reading mail works fine (it incorporates into my local home directory),
although this is my first test of sending mail. I assume we still have
to deal with the issues of /bin/mail and emacs mh-e.

We dp have at least one user (wanderer) who tried to install dash and
xlogin and had trouble as a result of the missing files; I'll explain
things to him.

At any rate, with all those issues taken care of, I have a more or less
quiche-looking Athena workstation in my dorm room, except that I'm using
a local home directory, much faster than going through AFS. Very good
work.
