Just so people know -- I was able to get into the BIOS setup (it
requires booting and then hitting escape at the right time [which I
don't know]) and re-enable the cache. It now gets around 12K, ie.
about right for a 486/25, which I believe it is.

   quiche-lorraine:/tmp/metcalf/dhry is the binary (and I just ran it
   again, 50,000 iterations yielded about 3200 dhry/sec).
