Subject: can't connect to ethernet
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
I have a Dell GX1 on campus which is partitioned half-Windows98 and half
RedHat Linux 6.2. When I boot the Windows partition I have no difficulty
connecting to the MITnet but I can't do the same from the Linux partition.
Netscape gives me the following error message:
"Warning: the following hosts are unknown
kirsch
home.netscape.com
home6.netscape.com
internic.net
This means that some or all hosts will be unreachable.
Perhaps there is a problem with your name server. If
your site must use a non-root name server, you will need
to set the$SOCKS_NS enveironment variable to point at
the appropriate name server. It may be necessary to set
this variable, or the SOCKS host preference to the IP
address of the host in question rather than its name."
I am using a 3Com Fast EthernetLink XL 10/100MB TX( 3C905B-TX)
If I type "ifconfig eth0" I get:
eth0 Link encap: Ethernet HWaddr 00:B0:D0:1A:BE:5c
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric: 1
RX packets :0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets :0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
collisons: 0 txqueuelen:100
Interrupt: 11 Base Address: 0xdc00
If I use Network Configurator, all the settings for eth0 seem correct except
the interface comes up "inactive" while the localhost is active.
Any help or advise would be appreciated.
