Subject: Installing Athena-RH5.2 on a Dell Pentium Pro200
Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 17:56:14 EST
From: Jeff Chuang <jchuang@MIT.EDU>

I'm having some strange problems regarding installing Athena 5.2
on my machine.

I created a boot image disk from
/mit/linux/Linux-Athena/redhat-5.2/i386/images/athena-boot.img
but I am unable to boot it successfully. After I choose the
option "upgrade or install" on the first screen that appears, I get
a "boot failed" message as it is loading vmlinuz.

However, I can install RH5.0 (non-Athena) from a pre-bought boot
disk and CD. That boot disk works fine.

A weird thing about this is that I was able to boot from the athena
boot disk a few days ago. I didn't complete my installation then
because it didn't recognize my ethernet card (an old Allied Telesis 1500).
I changed to a linksys etherfast 10/100, which I expected to
be compatible with RH5.2 using the tulip driver.

But when I tried to boot the athena-boot disk with the new card in place,
I was unable to boot up. I took the new ethernet card back out
but I still was not able to boot up.

I'm somewhat at a loss. I suspected a hardware problem
with my motherboard, but then when RH5.0 booted properly, I thought it
might have something to do with 5.2. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jeff
