Subject: Important security patches for Red Hat Linux
Date: Thu, 09 Sep 1999 10:25:15 EDT
From: Kevin Fu <fubob@MIT.EDU>

Please read this email carefully if you run a Red Hat Linux box. You
should patch your Athena-Linux box if you haven't updated since this
morning. This patches many security holes in Linux-Athena 4.2 and
5.2. If you're running Linux-Athena, you should take the updates by
running the following commands as root:

        /bin/athena/attach -n linux
        /mit/linux/update-new.pl

You might then want to reboot your system (shutdown -r now) to ensure
that all the updates have taken effect.

Many older versions are vulnerable too. If you have another Red Hat
distribution or version, you should manually patch your machine. For
details, see http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/errata/.

The recent security holes allow users to become root with a snap. We
STRONGLY recommend you apply these patches. Crackers are actively
exploiting these holes. Thanks for making MITnet less like swiss
cheese!
