Linux-Athena 5.2, which was released as a "public beta test" five
months ago, is now Fully Released.
Linux-Athena 5.2: "The One True Release of Linux-Athena." :-)
Anyway, it's a good system, and if you or anyone you know is
considering installing (or re-installing) Linux-Athena, please use
version 5.2.
Here's a slightly modified copy of the announcement that I sent five
months ago:
-----
Announcing the Linux-Athena 5.2 release
SIPB and linux-dev are proud to announce that the Linux-Athena 5.2
distribution is now available.
The spiffy new features of this system include:
- Based on RedHat Linux 5.2, which uses the spiffy thread-safe glibc
(i.e. libc 6) shared library.
- Based on Athena 8.2, which has spiffy security features like krb5
and an ssh client and server.
- New versions of tons of Linux and Athena software.
If you want to use this system, we recommend that you do a fresh new
install of your computer. It may be possible to upgrade a system from
Linux-Athena 4.2 to Linux-Athena 5.2, but we do not support this and
we do not recommend it.
The instructions on how to install Linux-Athena 5.2 can be viewed with
the command:
xdvi /afs/sipb.mit.edu/project/doc/current/linux-athena.dvi
They can be printed with the command:
dvips /afs/sipb.mit.edu/project/doc/current/linux-athena.dvi
Or, you can go to the SIPB office (W20-575) and pick up a copy of
"Installing RedHat-Athena Linux".
If you have any questions about the system, the documentation at
http://web.mit.edu/linux/www may be helpful. Or, you can send email
to linux-help@mit.edu.
Have a nice day,
Sal Valente <svalente@mit.edu>
