Thanks for the explanation. Since my secret real goal is to get the
mainline source tree to wash correctly for Linux, I'll hack
/etc/ld.so.conf on drug-lord.
(For linux-dev, I'd recommend going with the first option, but I'm no
more qualified than anyone else to make that decision.)
