A followup for whoever decides to fix this problem:
This only seems to be a problem on 4.2 systems.
On 5.2 systems, mail sent to user@machine-name.mit.edu gets accepted
by machine-name and stored in the local spool file if the machine is
running sendmail -bd, and bounced back to the sender otherwise.
On 4.2 systems, mail sent to user@machine-name.mit.edu gets rewritten
as user@mit.edu. I think that either making webmaster@machine-name a
special case, or changing the general rule to the way it works on 5.2
systems, would be a good fix.
