I've been trying out the new beta release of the Slackware distribution.
Slackware 1.1.1 seems to be a stable, complete, and clean distribution
(from what I have seen of it so far).
It includes the 0.99pl14 kernel (and the pl14c alpha kernel as an option),
XFree86 2.0, and claims to follow the new filesystem specifications.
The biggest problem seems to be an over-proliferation of symbolic
links all over the place (but I assume these are provided for
compatability).
I've tried to get some of the Athena packages working but have been
unable to do so for the lack of a hostname (my own fault... :-)
Note that the connection to ftp.cdrom.com is very slow (it took about
6 hours for the ftp of everything). I was planning to put this
distribution in /mit/linux/slackware/Slackware.1.1.1, but there
is not enough space on /mit/linux (and I don't think getting
rid of Slackware 1.1.0 is a good idea until 1.1.1 has been around
for a while). When there is enough space, I volunteer to keep
the Slackware distribution there up to date (Patrick V. patches
it on a regular basis.) For now, if you want to install it, send
me email and I'll let you do an NFS install off my disk.
