What you need to do is boot the machine into DOS (you can use a win95
or DOS machine to create a DOS boot floppy). Then use the 3com
disk that came with your card to run the config program. In the
set of card configuration options it will have a media type setting
that will be something like auto-detect, rj-45, bnc, AUI, depending
on the type of card. Set it to whatever type of networking equipment
you are currently using. Save this information to the card. Now instead
of attempting to autodetect the media type, the cards will "remember"
that you've told it it is to use a specific media type and default
to that. (Thus if you ever change the type of network you're on
you'll need to rerun the config and save the info to the card
again.)

Once you've done this, reboot the machine and begin the Linux
install.

Note that the card will use the media type that you've told it
in the config regardless of what OS it is running under.
