Official policy on what build flags to use for the release?

Past Linux-Athena releases have generally consisted of stripped
binaries. Currently, the source tree builds with -g and installs
unstripped binaries. I'm ambivalent about this change. I can see
some weak arguments being made in favor of the old way and some in
favor of the new way.
Does anyone have a strong opinion about whether the release should be
built with -g or -O or both or neither? I don't particularly care
what ends up happening, but I'd like it to be an actual policy rather
than "whatever happens to be the state of the source tree at the
time."
Have a nice day,
Sal.
