After careful consideration, I removed most of the "hacks" from
update.pl. (My changes are under RCS control in the updates
directory.) Some of the hacks were clearly unnecessary with 4.2, such
as fixing the permissions on SuperProbe and unbreaking pam.conf.
Other hacks are probably unnecessary. (Does update.pl have to
preserve changes to files that rpm knows are configuration files?
Shouldn't rpm preserve those changes?)

Sadly, the --nodeps in the rpm line still appears necessary. (For
example, db failed to updated because it "depends on /bin/sh". I
guess bash doesn't claim to provide /bin/sh. I didn't look into it
much.)

I ran the script on snork. The results were a little ugly. There's a
new libc-devel package, which gave an error that it couldn't rmdir
/usr/include, but it installed anyway. And I don't think the athena
ppp script patches were properly installed either before or after the
update. But, basically, the new packages were installed and the
system seems ok.

Have a nice day,
Sal.
