Is the new way going to be more complex? I don't know. Then again,
you're not the "normal" customer that we're trying to serve. You are
more the exception than the rule, and the new system will be much
easier for the "normal" customers.
In your case, what you'd need to do is install Redhat, AFS, and
"Athena". This would get you an SRVD-based system. Then you'd run
spm (which comes with "Athena") to bring pseudo-packages local
(similar to the mkserv model). Then you could turn off AFS and you'd
only have the locally-installed software available.
I'm not sure what you mean by "back out the athena rc file so you can
install the athena-rc RPM"... The athena rc file should be a part of
the athena-rc RPM; unless you're talking about a modified athena.init.
If this is the case, then it may be worthwhile to figure out a way to
support your usage of athena.init in the default file, so you don't
need local hacks.
Also, what do you mean by "play around with login programs so you can
use kerberized telnet without getting an Athena login"? Since we plan
to\ move towards a PAM model, you can basically turn of the "kerberos"
part (to get you a kerberos ticket) without turning on the
Hesiod/Attach part (to get you an Athena session)... Is that what you
mean? Or do you mean something else? How would you do what you want
on an Athena sparc or sgi?
