We already discussed this on linux-dev, at length. I was fairly sure
we had consensus to move to an SRVD model.
The plan is to base installation on an srvd system. Users may choose
to install parts of the system locally via "pseudo-packages".
Basically, instead of using RPM, you'd use SPM, and it would allow you
to move, say, "kerberos", "zephyr", "mh", and "discuss" locally, and
everything else would still point to the srvd.
I feel that the new design is the best of both worlds. It allows for
a rapid installation and can use much less local disk space as
required. It also allows people to choose to bring packages local.
The design also calls for an 'integrity check' at boot/reactivate
time, to notify the user if the local machine differs from the srvd.
So, basically, you can still get the functionality of what currently
exists (to choose to install certain packages locally). The
difference is that it will use a new pseudo-package manager rather
than RPM.
Chris, is that acceptable to you?
