Subject: [LINUX-ATHENA] Numerous security and bug fixes available
Date: Tue, 17 Dec 1996 01:10:06 EST
From: Erik Nygren <nygren@MIT.EDU>

During the past few months, a number of bugs and security holes have
been discovered in RedHat Linux 4.0.0. Many of the security holes
have exploit scripts that are widely available. If you're running
RedHat Linux-Athena 4.0.0, we strongly recommend that you upgrade to
the new packages which fix these problems. To do this, run as root:

	attach -n linux
	/mit/linux/redhat/current/i386/updates/update.pl

This will upgrade all the RPM's which you have installed
for which fixes are available. You may want to reboot after
running this to ensure that the new versions of programs like
sendmail get restarted.

Because you may have the most recent versions of some of these
packages already, you'll get numberous messages like:

foo package foo-3.2.1-4 is already installed
	error: foo.3.2.1-4.i386.rpm cannot be installed

it is safe to ignore these warnings. Pages that get upgraded
will have a progress bar displayed as they're installed:

	foo ###################################################

It is generally a good idea to run update.pl on a regular basis
as new fixes are added as they become available from RedHat.
The update.pl script also makes a number of other fixes
(such as removing suidness from SuperProbe) which do not
have full package replacements available. The kernel and kernel-sources
packages are located in /mit/linux/redhat/current/i386/updates/
and are NOT upgraded by the update.pl script to avoid causing problems
for people who've installed new kernels by hand.

This will only work on Intel-based machines running RedHat 4.0.0.
If you're still running RedHat 3.0.3, we strongly recommend that
you upgrade.

If you have any questions, send mail to linux-help@mit.edu.
(Please do NOT cc: linux-announce).
