The host is "small-gods.mit.edu", not "smallgods.mit.edu"

Also, which Linux distribution are you trying to install?  If you are
installing from scratch I highly recommend you install redhat (which
is also available on small-gods).  Very shortly we will have a
Redhat-based Linux-Athena client installation system up and running...
