About the AFS cache on the root partition: correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't
afsd crash the machine badly if it runs out of promised cache space? Therefore
a cache partition being absolutely necessary if you want a very dependable AFS
installation? I can imagine a rogue program or mail bomb filling up a tmp
or spool directory on afsd's "stomping grounds."
I imagine the users who will benefit from auto-installation may not be
constantly aware of keeping their root partition clean/clear enough.
Anyways, as an auto-installation distributor, I think asses should be covered
and the most coservative approach be taken, i.e. insist on the cache partition,
otherwise they can install it themselves.
