Actually, the sources you should be looking at are in
/afs/sipb/project/sipb-athena; and I'd fixed this problem
a long time ago.. I guess the change I made never propagated
out to the Linux-Athena distribution.
The change I made is exactly what you did... Take a look
at /afs/sipb/project/sipb-athena/kerberos/appl/bsd/login.c
I had built a login.krb from there, but it seems to not have
been installed anywhere.
