Software Accessibility Team Project Report for FY 2001, 2nd quarter
Prepared by Kathy Cahill, Team Leader

The Software Accessibility Team has met 4 times since October 2000 to
develop an Institute wide Software Accessibility Policy and Guidelines.

Accomplishments:

*Team has met to iron out wording of the Software Accessiblity Policy and
Guidelines. Current drafts are located at
http://web.mit.edu/is/integration/projects/softaccessibility
*Team has determined that there need to be two sets of guidelines -- one
geared towards developers that is more technical and one geared towards
departmental purchasers that is user-oriented.
*Team is still developing wording for the guidelines, as well as a web site
that links to visual examples and text explanation of accessibility
guidelines.
*A sub-group of the team is meeting weekly to develop understandable
guidelines and examples, to be reviewed and approved by the project team.
*Team leader has also met with Nancy Kelly of the President's Office to
review whether this policy should become part of MIT's Policies and
Procedures.
*Team has developed a draft plan to publicize these guidelines by visiting
individual departments, labs and centers as well as publish articles in I/S
publications and offer Quick Start classes.

Plan for Fy 2001, Q3

*Finalize guidelines, develop a web site with examples and explanations
(may need to hire student help to do this).
*Develop plan to bring this issue before Academic Council for informational
purposes.
*Jean Foster and Kathy Cahill will be giving an IAP class on this topic
Jan. 22nd.
*Further develop publicity/marketing plans for the guidelines to heighten
awareness in the MIT Community.
*Bring project to a close between Q3 and Q4.

Kathy
